Re: self install help?
check beforehand by sectioning your hair with tiny ponytail holders to make sure you have enough dreads, some of my first installs took an hour or two longer because i would section too small in the back and would have to redo alot of the back to get enough dreads for the front.
Take a small break if you start getting frustrated! make sure to have something to drink and some nonmessy nibbles nearby too, youll get hungry!
Ask for a second opinion! sometimes another pair of eyes can see stuff on your head better then you can
make sure you have enough/strong enough hair elastics before you start!
DONT use conditioner beforehand if you want the dreads to stay in!
have something fun to watch on, like a movie or a show you enjoy
do alot of research! this board and fakehairisluff on livejournal both have alot of helpful advice from wonderful ladies with more experience
GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN!!!

i second the film thing - get a load of good films or tv box sets and the time will fly by
oh and do the back ones first - they're the most difficult - if you do all the easy ones first and are left with the hard ones when you're tired i tend to lose patience and flip out

Re: self install help?
I've only ever installed on myself so have clocked many hours stood/sat between two mirrors! I sit at my full length mirror with another propped up on a chair behind me so I can angle it to where I need to see. If you've never installed before then it'll take quite a while, especially on a full head of hair. If you havn't already got one you'll find yourself wanting an undercut! My arms and back used to hurt when I first started so make sure you give yourself plenty of breaks and time to finish it. I was rubbish at this and had to rush to get it done before I was going out! Then stick on your favourite cd and get cracking!
I found it easiest to start from the back. Use a good comb to seperate a row of hair and use loads of clips and bands to keep the hair ontop of your head out of the way. Then you can start at one side of your head and work your way across. When you have finished one row then you simply let your hair down, section off the next row above the dreads/plastic/whatever and start again! If you're not sure if you have enough dreads do the ones around the hair line first. That way you can make those ones nice and neat and have larger sections in the middle if you run out. Then you can tie your dreads into a ponytail and no-one will notice the fat sections!
I hope this helps..

Re: self install help?
if you have a decent web cam, that's a lot easier to set up than trying to make a hall of mirrors lol

I never use any mirrors...
I use my comb to do the separating and my fingers to feel the thickness of the sections

Re: self install help?
i did a self install last week & must say - THIS defiantely helped i had 2 mirrors, a drink & some choons. i already have an undercut & have since i was 13 undercuts FTW!!!!! took me about 4 or 5 hours, tbh i didn't count how long it took.
I'm very happy - i had to change a few elastics though, as i had some cheap ones & a few snapped - but apart from that all is excellent!!!!
