I'd appreciate a spellcheck button also. There are members who DO speak English as a first language who mis-spell things, which can make their posts difficult to read.

Firefox has a spell check option :) You need to download additional language packs if you don't speak American English, but it's worth it.

you can get a "dictionary" on firefox which has a spell checker in. I use that.

We can find out about the spell checker option, but I have never seen that on any of the forums I have used, has anyone seen that on a phpbb board? I'll get one of the admins to check but in the meantime one of the firefox add ons would seem like your best bet :D

Yeah, I'm kinda tired of seeing grown adults typing like 4 year old kids. I can understand the odd mistake, especially if they're unable to spell well, but even neglecting to capitalise your "I"'s? Does my head in. Those little red squiggly lines under their text isn't for decoration.

Even if you press f7, it's better than nothing.

i don't mind people not using proper capitalisation (mainly cos i do it ) but misspelled words are annoying. although, a spell checker obviously only picks up words that are spelled wrong, not words used wrongly, eg. their/they're, than/that etc. it irks me most when mods do it! not that i'm having a go, lord knows i'm not perfect, but just while we're on the subject

I haven't noticed any mods do that.

I'm guilty of the odd typo but I think my knowledge of basic grammar is pretty good.

lol sorry. it's just i view mods a more senior position and more professional :? i dunno, it's weird! it annoys me in real life when line managers and others higher up than me don't spell check or read over emails too! it's not something that happens all the time, i wasn't trying to start anything. it was just on topic..

are you talking typos or misuse of language?

And are you talking about mods in general or the mods on this board?

Just out of interest, I am not trying to start anything either. If we are not doing what members want then we need to know.

Let's hope you aren't talking about me anyway since I teach kids how to write and spell! I know I make the odd typo, and I do admit that being lazy I sometimes leave them in even when I have seen them (like I often type something as somehting, and often end up leaving that, there is research after all which says that we can read words in context so long as the first and last letters are there and all the middle letters can be in a jumble! :P )

It is useful having the red wiggly lines xD They are a good enough spell checker for really silly misspelling. It's all if people bother to use it.

are you all talking about some red wiggly lines you already have or some you would like to have?

You can get the red wiggly lines with the dictionary add on on firefox, I have those.

Also, what does f7 do? I just tried it and it didn't seem to have anything to do with spell checking :?

well if you already have wiggly lines (which I don't and f7 turns caret browsing on and off) then why do we need an additional spell checker?

Are the wiggly lines part of the board you mean, or are they to do with f7?

do the wiggly lines correct the spelling if you right click on them?

If people already have that, why don't I? No! I mean, why do we need something else?

 Aww! If you don't have any red lines, then you have nothing to worry about. Your spelling is just fine. :)

Generally, f7 brings up spell check, though evidentially some computers don't! Red lines specify that a word is spelt incorrectly. It's taught me that "definitely" is spelt as so, not "definately". :3

It's probably either a Windows or an IE thing. It doesn't work for me, and I'm using XP and Firefox.

It really bothers me when I see "definitely" spelt as "definately" or even "defiantly"! The there/they're/their and your/you're mistakes bother me as well :?

F7 turns something called "caret browsing" on for me, I use XP and Firefox.

I'm using Firefox and XP and F7 turned on the wiggly lines for me! Didn't know it did that, which is handy (thanks CirqueMachine!) as my spelling isn't the best.
It also tried turning on "caret browsing"* but I just clicked no...

*I'm not entirely sure what it does (I didn't try it out I just pressed no) but its something to do with text cursors, so you can navigate the webpage using your cursor keys

I've got pretty crap spelling so a spell checker would be a good idea - I'll toy about with Firefox to see what it can do :D

Google's Chrome also has spell check built in. I realized I'd been spelling a few words wrong for a while now.

i'm using vista + firefox, f7 turns on something called caret browsing for me too, whatever that is.. I think my spelling is generally pretty good though, I'm just lazy when it comes to capitalisation sometimes.. but hey, it's the internets.. at least nobody on here types with an overactive shift/capslock key... I think people on this forum are generally pretty good when it comes to spelling and grammar, compared to some places..

I am one of the people that always forgets to "I" instead of "i" my bad.....shall attempt to remember for future use - I can't have the dictionary option though, because I live on this forum while I am at work, & have no admin rights to download anything. F7 doesn't do anything for me
