A guide to hair and board Terminology

Post by VixenSingsBlack » Tue Jun 07, 2011 6:39 pm

50mm Wave = Extension hair with a loose wave shape to mimic wavy European hair.

Bangs = The American term for fringe.

Blanket stitch braid = A braid that involves three legs of hair, but is more secure than a three way braid. It is also shorter. These features make it more sensible for braiding in extensions.

Blending = Combining two or more colors of braiding hair to create an all new color.

Braiding Hair = This means loose hair. Usually it is folded in half and sold in a long packet.

Bubble Wrap =The common sheets of small, air filled bubbles used for protecting shipped items. Available in several colors. Rolled and secured with tape or other means to create dread type shapes.

Bulk Hair = See Braiding Hair.

Candy Cane = Two colors of hair swirled together like the stripes of a candy cane. Can be made in both synthetic and wool dreads.

Coon Tails = Usually clip in hair extensions which are striped horizontally.

Corriedale = A type of roving which is soft, but not as soft as merino. Not as easily felted as merino.

Corrugated Tubing = Hard plastic tubing which has ribs down the length; available in several colors. Available at hardware stores or online.

Crin = Also known as tubular crinoline or cyberlox, this item is most commonly used as ribbon for gift package decoration. Available in a wide range of colors and very, very, very light; most often found in hair falls but can also be installed into hair. Available in several diameters. In Europe, available at party supply stores or online, in the USA mostly available online.

Cyberlox = Also known as tubular crinoline or cyberlox, this item is most commonly used as ribbon for gift package decoration. Available in a wide range of colors and very, very, very light; most often found in hair falls but can also be installed into hair. Available in several diameters. In Europe, available at party supply stores or online, in the USA mostly available online.

DE =Double Ender. A dreadlock that has a center point with two legs. The natural hair is braided down one leg of the dread, leaving the other leg to hang free.

European = Considered by many to be the best human hair extensions. Available in a wide array of colors and very expensive.

Falls = A hair piece that is usually attached to buns atop the head by tying elastic or lace around the base of the bun. Falls can be made of many things—synth dreads, wool dreads, fancy yarns, cyberlox, loose hair, rexlace, faux-roving, foam and more.

Faux-Roving = Extensions made from polar fleece pulled into the shape of dreads. Lighter than synth or wool dreads.

Felting Needle = Mostly used for wool, a felting needle has tiny barbs on it to pull small fibers through other fibers, causing the fibers to lock.

Foam = Flat sheets of craft foam cut into thin strips and most commonly used as accents in falls or on wigs. Can be installed on the head—very light weight.

Fringe = The British term for bangs.

Harlequin = A DEs whose two legs are different colors. Wonderful if you want dreads that don’t match your natural hair color.

Heat Shrink Plastic/Tubing = Plastic available in several colors which shrinks when heat is applied. Available in flat sheets and tubing. Available in hardware stores or gift package stores and online.

Install = This usually means that the extension hair will be semi-permanently attached to your natural hair. There are many types of installation methods, which are covered in the categories to your left.

I-tip = Small bundles of extension hair. One end has been glued and rolled into a stick shape.

Jumbo Braid = A texture in extension hair which is quite kinky.

Kit = Usually loose dreads sent to a buyer for the purpose of installing semi-permanently to the natural hair.

KK = Kanekalon braiding hair. Reacts to heat very well.

LED = Light emitting diode, or a small, low power, low heat light. Used in flashlight/torches and numerous other applications. Can be used to accent hair falls or wigs.

Loopie Cording = Small diameter, soft, hollow tubing available in a variety of rainbow colors. Lighter than rexlace or sgettis. Often sold as a child's craft supply.

Marbled = When two or more braiding hair colors are combined together but not fully. When backcombed and sealed, it has a streaked or marbled look.

Merino = A type of wool which is skin soft. Very, very easily felted.

Microfiber Hair = A type of braiding hair that does not tangle and has a high heat tolerance. It can be straightened and curled multiple times. Used mostly to extend hair or add colorful streaks but can also be used to make synth dreads. "Shape Shifter" is a brand name.

Micro-rings = A micro ring or linkie is a small ring of wire covered in plastic. Your natural hair is passed through the micro ring, then extension hair is pushed in through the bottom. Using pliers, the micro ring is clamped closed. To remove, use pliers to squeeze open the micro ring.

Nail Tip = Also called U Tip extensions. Small bundles of extension hair. One end has been glued and shaped to resemble a human fingernail.

Natural Style = A natural style dread is made from synthetic hair, but twisting is not used during the sealing process. This makes the dread appear more like human hair dreads. Example here. With wool dreads, this can also refer to a wiggly or waviness to the dreadlock Example here

Pencil roving = This is the same thing as roving, except much thinner. Can be used raw for hair falls, or felted for wool dreads.

Pinchbraiding = A technique of using a three way braid to add extension hair to natural hair; usually done to very small sections of hair. String may be used with the braiding process as a way of securing the braid.

PP = Refers to synthetic hair that is not very heat reactive; can be sealed at very high heat. Can be added to KK for extra puff.

Pre-tipped = Small sections of synthetic or human hair that has been tipped, or stuck together into a small grouping at one end with glue.

Print = When a pattern is added on top of the extensions. Most commonly found on clip in extensions in leopard or zebra print, but also available on synthetic dreads and wool dreads.

Remi = This term refers to good quality human hair from India. It is both thin and strong and comes in a wide array of colors.

Rexlace = Flat plastic string; may also be called lanyard lacing. Mostly used as accents in falls due to the heavy weight, but it can be installed on the head. Available as a child's craft supply.

Roving = Bulk wool that comes in a thick, long, snake like rope. Under our hair extension mind set, it is used to make felted wool dreads (also called roving dreads or wool roving dreads); wool dreads are lighter than synth dreads.

Rubber Grip Sheets = Flat sheets of rubber perforated with small holes. Most often used in drawers or on slick surfaces to prevent items from sliding. Very light.

SE = Single Ender. A dreadlock that has a loop at its top and only one leg. The natural hair is pulled through the loop at the top, then split, and braided down the leg.

S'Gettis = Small diameter, round plastic lacing available in a wide range of colors. Similar to rexlace but round. More common in Europe than the USA; often sold as a child's craft supply.

Shrinkies = Small tubes of heat shrink material often lined with heat activated glue to extend natural hair or add colorful streaks. Natural hair is threaded through the tube, then extension hair is added. A heat source is applied to shrink the tube and activate the glue.

Silky = Braiding hair that is straight and smooth.

Silky Curls = Braiding hair or weft hair that is silky and curled into tight spirals.

Silicone = A spray (often called braid spray) or serum that consists mostly of silicone and can be used on natural or synthetic hair to prevent tangling and fly aways.

Synth-Dreads = Dreads made from synthetic hair by backcombing, twisting, and sealing with heat. Most commonly made from Kanekalon. Many dreadstyles are available, and there are many ways of sealing with heat. Example here and here.

Three Way Braid = The most commonly used braid. Involves three legs that go over, under, over, under each other to create the braided effect.

Toyokalon = Is braiding hair that reacts to heat well and usually comes as silky, not kinky, with a bit of curl at the end.

Transitional = A dread which starts with one color at the top and changes colors down the length of the dread. This can be just two colors or multiple color changes. Example here

U Tip = Also called Nail Tip extensions. Small bundles of extension hair. One end has been glued and shaped to resemble a human fingernail.

Weave Cap = Once a clients entire head of hair has been cornrowed, this mesh cap is sewn over the cornrows. The advantage is that weft hair can be sewn into the mesh anywhere, not just the cornrow tracks.

Wefting = Loose hair that has been sewn together at the top by a machine. Used to extend the length of hair, to add streaks of color or to make fringes/bangs.

Wig Cap = A stretchy cap worn under wigs to control natural hair and prevent soiling of the wig.

Wrappy/Knotty Style = This is a style of synthetic dread that involves no heat sealing. Rather, the backcombing is secured by wrapping small bits of hair all around the dread, creating a textured look.

Yaki = A texture found in extension hair that mimics the texture of relaxed Afro Caribbean hair.
