Do you cut your hair to make installing dreads easier?

Post by Librarynerd » Tue Dec 21, 2010 1:50 am

I'm finding myself yearning to get a deep undercut or a mohawk just to make installing dreads faster/easier.

Do you cut your hair in a certain way to facilitate easy dread installs?

Do you make your fringe thicker so you don't have to install as many dreads?
Seems to me that a 5in long mohawk would be the ideal install length and style.
What do you think? What hairstyles work best for you installing dreads?

Um, no. I know a few people have put in a tiny undercut or whatever for ease.

I have had an undercut for the past 15 years, in May this year though I shaved all my hair off barring my fringe, so was dreadless for a while. When it started to grow back I shaved it in to a hawk, not for ease of dread installs, but because I had wanted to for a long time but didn't have the patience to grow a tiny bit at th back of my head when it was an undercut.

However, when I had my undercut I'd install anywhere between 40 to 50 dreads in about 3 or 4 hours (my hair was shoulder length back then) whereas now, my hair is hawked...it's about 4" in most places, I install 25-30 & that takes me 2 hours tops.

I did a few years ago, I had a very high undercut, it was partly down to making installs easier. I have a full head of hair again now, but I do tend to keep it around shoulder length because its easier, plus I wear loose extensions too. :D

Blimey Sarah, you managed to fit a lot of dreads on your head! I think I had about25 max when I had a high undercut, still my hair is quite fine too.

I used to shave my head for the fashion, but I did keep everything to about 3" long where the install was. Meant I couldn't be without my dreads or else I'd look a right weirdo with just a tuft of hair!

Same, Lorny! Thats why I like having a full head of hair now, mine just looked awful out of dreads, thin and bleach damaged and I couldn't cover the undercut. Bleugh! Not a good look for me.

I'm hoping my friend is going to be lovely enough to keep installing my hair for me while I try to grow it. I have a full install now but I want to have long, even hair. I have trichotillomania and I really need it to start growing where I pull it out on my crown. Dreads are the perfect answer to my prayers! Need to treat the cause though too.
