Itchies Thread
I've finally found something that has helped my itches and has left a lovely cooling feeling on my scalp Eucalyptus Oil. It smells lovely and reminds me of "Vicks" [The balm for all ages to ease the effects of a cold and assist breathing]. 99p per bottle - bargin much

I love a few drops of tea tree and peppermint essential oils in a spray bottle filled with water. If I'm really, really having a bad time of it, I'll use a tiny bit of Lanacane ointment and rub it in well. I wish I could use euclayptus oils, but I'm very allergic to it.

Even if I try to scratch with my fingernails I take it too far. My only problem with srpays is I'm worried about working out & sweating & getting it in my eyes & such. Plus I find the more stuff I put on my scalp the grosser my head gets and fast.
I was using a spray that contained a mix of oils (peppermint & tea tree I know for sure) but the scent just seemed to get too overpowering for me.

I have to get my boyfriend to apply any ointments to my scalp; because if I start yanking at my dreads he knows how to calm me down. Thank crap for having someone so calm!

I just use a dab of tea tree oil on a qtip. I tried diluting it a bit with water, but after it dried it made the itchies worse for me!
Getting a good tea tree oil shampoo helps too.

I just ignore it for the first 1-2 weeks and then it goes away. After that, I douse my hair in braid spray before each time that I wash it (and I don't use braid spray aside from that). Works pretty well as long as you've got that first 1-2 weeks of self-control

I don't often find that the itchies are that bad for me. With the first set of dreads I had, they were, but I don't know how it's changed since then. I rarely scratch, and when I do it's just by my temples if anything!

Re: Itchies Thread
I just made myself a scalp spray with about 2 teaspoons of tea tree, 1 tablespoon of tea tree aloe vera, and a 1/2 bottle of water. It works okay but I am honestly tired of smelling tea tree oil on my head. I think I'm going to pick up a peppermint spray from the Body Shop this weekend and perhaps a peppermint shampoo from somewhere.
Anyone have any other suggestions? I have the most beautiful tomato red waist length SE's in right now but they're so heavy and so itchy but I'm determined not to take them out because they're simply lovely and it's killing me!
I heard somewhere it helps if you take an anti-histamine but I took some Benadryl allergy formula and it only worked for about an hour. Poo.

I just pour ice cold water over my scalp when it gets aggravated/itchy/hot. Cools everything down, leaves no residues.

Probably a good idea! I believe in the power of iciness to help anything related to inflammation.out.of.wonderland wrote:Hmm .. I might try rubbing an ice-cube on my head, lol.

I agree with IKS that if you can just leave well alone then it will subside after the first few weeks of HELL
I also find having an undercut and fringe out helps greatly as I can wash these bits for a bit of relief - nizoral shampoo is lovely for the itchies!
Rather than scratching, if it does get that unbearable, I find that banging my head with the flat of my hand offers nice relief without ripping my scalp to shreds - yes I look like someone of the most special sunshine bus variety I'm sure, but hey it works - give it a go and start a head banging revolution

This is a pretty good method if you don't want to do any damage to your scalp or fuzz up your roots. Slapping was what I was told to do when my tattoo was still healing.kaned_ferret wrote:Rather than scratching, if it does get that unbearable, I find that banging my head with the flat of my hand offers nice relief without ripping my scalp to shreds - yes I look like someone of the most special sunshine bus variety I'm sure, but hey it works - give it a go and start a head banging revolution

Re: Itchies Thread
I totally learned that one from all the African American girls in New Orleans. The chemical treatments to get their hair straight leaves their scalps very itchy and sore, but they cannot scratch because the scalp is so sensitive due to the chemicals. They run around patting their heads--so when I do it, I don't look too terribly insane!kaned_ferret wrote:

Re: Itchies Thread
a water spray takes away the itchiness for a little while, but i only ever really keep my dreads in for a week or so ( i like change to much) so itts not really such a problem for me but if i hae for some reason had them in a lttle longe and they get really bad i usually just take them out. i always wash hair when i haved dreads in too, just usually rubbing the shampoo onto the scalp somthing like polytar
