just whatever you'd use for a clothing wash....but a fraction of it.

Awesome. I just wanted to be sure before giving it a go. I'm still a little intimidated by roving! lol

Sarah I have given the washing machine method a go and it definately works for tightening the fibres but it makes an awful helix slit which i cant seem to get rid of, especially on the ends of the dreads... any ideas what i can do about it?? :)

hmmm, that's odd. Have you tried a different setting on your machine Hayley?

Ooh & palm roll the ends quite a bit before you put them in, hopefully should stop it. You could always try adding a few clothes to the wash - I find mine sometimes felt better when there is more than just dreads in the load

Your pastel curlies are machine dreads :D

I palm roll them quite a bit and if there any possible cracks I give them a quick going over with a felting needle

Is that prior to machine washing them??

I thought they were by the feel of them, I do love those curlies...

I havent tried using a different setting yet, it is on a low wash anyway, but sadly the washing machine is broken, spurting out water, need to have a look and unblock it...

ah, boo. I hope you get it sorted.

I've never needed to needle felt before the wash, & the only time I've had to afterwards was if the little embellishments weren't quite on or sometimes you can see the line on harlies.

I have more than one wool setting on mine, so I've tried both, with slightly different results. any chance of a pic of your helixed dreads?

Good luck hon & I hope you get your machine fixed soon!

I do it before the wash... But I'm nowhere near as experienced in palm-rolling as Sarah and sometimes I can just tell after rolling them that there may be cracks - I don't have to do it often and they are getting a lot better. It does make them felt up quicker though - I needle felt SE's loads and some of them only need one wash

I will try and get some pictures added on here for you Sarah.

yes I cant believe how much quicker it makes roving dreads... its a god send... until the machine stops emptying and spurts out of the front draw... gahhh, electical appliances eh..

Yesh....needle felting SE's is awesome!! I palm roll em once they're out too, so makes even more sturdy! I think I did mine twice.

If you were to do SE dreads this way, would you just leave the loop open when you palm roll or is there a different way you have to do it?

SE's yeah, they're a little different. Half your roving & half again (Like the harlies) but then wrap it over a knitting needle, or a pen or someting. The palm roll it. I find going over them with a felting needle works quite well.

When they come out of thr wash they've lost the hole, but you can feel it, so just pook the hole back through :D

Using this method now, it's amazing! I'd never have enough patience to make myself a set whilst i've got orders, so this is a great way of having the best of both worlds :D

Wish i knew how to do the webbed ones!! :p

Bwah ha ha haaaaa!!!!!!

Believe me when I say it's easy, but too difficult to explain. I've got Phoenix's dreads in the wash atm, when they're dry, I'll start webbing them. I'll try to photograph it, & figure out how to explain it. It may have to be video'd :? I'd never thought of that til now

Proof that I'm not always perfect:

Or should I say, what happens when you go out & the OH puts all the washing (including a pillow with dreads in it) into the tumble dryer on hot! >_<

Gahhhhh what a shame about them black dreads... you can still salvage the wool for accents or detailing though... bless him though, at least he was trying to be helpful!!

I gave this a go yesterday and they came out perfect!
I did them on a 30° wash for 25 minutes, also chucked a couple of tops in with the wash and I found they come out better with a couple of other items in the machine.

I'll post pics in the showoff section when I've finished the set :)

I tried this method last night with just two dreads; I haven't examined them for cracks etc but my first thought was that they had shrunk to half the size...

Is this normal?

I'm gonna have another bash tonight, making longer ones as I know its trial and error with machine settings, but I just wondered if this amount of shrinkage was normal.

Wonderful Tut by the way!!! Thank you :D

UPDATE: I played with my machine settings and discovered that the Delicate Cycle on my machine was the best for roving dreads with very little shrinkage.
