dying STRIPEY roving! + handy tip!!

Post by cherrybombdreads » Sat May 29, 2010 11:45 am

After a girl on here mentioned to me 'couldn't you dye wool like tye dye?' I've been on a mission!

It's failed a bit, but i think i didnt tie the elastics tight enough!

SO
here it is.

I tied my wool up like a sausage, and then let it soak in hot water.
I boiled vinegar and food colouring together and shoved all the wool into it.
Simmered it until the water ran clear.
Rinsed it in cold water and cut the elastics off.

This is what I was left with :

I think bigger and tighter elastics would get a better result! I shall try it over my new few dying sessions!

xx

Handy tip:

I found today, if you buy non slip matting (the stuff that stops your carpets from sliding around ya floor!) and aafter gently hand felting, fold the matting around the wool and ROLL, it felts almost perfectly! Infact i've had less cracks that ever before! then i just tidy up witha bit of hand rolling and tadaaa nice felted dread :D

Other things that work is the wicker place mats, bubble wrap and tulle or fishnet fabric. This last method is used for nuno felting but I can see it working well for rolling dreads aswell.

Aww cute little roving links.
I can only imagine what they would look like if you felted and then dyed the dreads after braiding some thick pieces of plastic around them.
Hmm...

I made these a couple of years ago: felting first, then tie-dyeing with cotton string 1 and 2 times (and leaving the purple ones in too long the first time  ) :

So that's what they could look like
