No-Blend Transitional Dread (Synth Hair Dye Tutorial)
So I had a little dye left and decided to do a more closer tutorial of how I dyed the synth hair from my Leeloo Wig.
First, the materials.
Acrylic artist ink - orange, red and yellow. Just a note: the red, like with hair dye, does not stick as well as other colours. Red colour molecules are just bigger than others and thus they're harder to bind.
Isopropyl alcohol and methyl hydrate (available in your local drugstore and home paint section at your local home improvement store respectively).
A plastic measuring cup and a pippette (from my local craft store).
A spray bottle (from a local dollar store).
As a note, I've tried this with sharpies as well. It's not worth the hassle (or the smell) and acrylic artist ink is cheaper and has very vibrant colours.
So the measurements are thus: 3ml (about 1/2 a teaspoon) of ink to 100ml (about 1/2 cup) of 50:50 isopropyl alcohol/methyl hydrate mix. Very simple. It's easy enough to blut
I took some yellow jumbo braid and I went outside. It was windy, which is good, because despite not using sharpies, isopropyl alcohol is quite noxious.
I sprayed the hair with the dye.
I combed the dye in.
A closeup of the combed-in dye.
As a note, synthetic hair has no pores. Because it's poreless, you MUST comb it in to spread the dye and coat each strand. Otherwise, you'll just have all the colour wick between a few strands all the way down.
I gave the hair a bit of a heat treatment with a blowdryer to set the dye, and then rinsed with cold water. It helps pull away any excess and thus decreases the amount of colour transfer when passively handling the hair.
A view of the full length of the hair.
I made it into a basic single-ended dread. A bright tangarine orange at the top, a yellow the bottom.
To be honest, dyeing this way probably longer than making and blending a normal transitional dread, but I thought I'd just do it to make a hair dye tutorial with some leftover dye. The other thing is I wanted some flame-style dreads, but I don't have any orange hair on hand.
I've read online that certain fibres don't take the dye as well, but I work almost exclusively in kanekalon and modacrylic fibres (japanese fibres) and they all seem to take the dye quite well.

This really opens up the options for cutom colour dreads. How well do you think 613/white would dye up? Do the colours have to be similar shades like yellow to orange or do you think you could do a dramatic change?

I started with a blonde wig when doing the Leeloo wig (mentioned in the tutorial). The lighter colours dye up really well.
The wig dye acts very similarly to a Manic Panic/SFX natural hair dye - so it coats the shaft and does no colour lifting, therefore if the hair is darker, the colour doesn't show up as well. On top of that, you can't dye blue hair red, because the underlayer of red will still show through.

That's a brilliant idea...the possibilites are endless. You could do a whole head of white or 613 with little dipped ends in different rainbow colours or something like that

I had used basically this method for dyeing the bangs of a wig but it NEVER occurred to me to use it to make transitional dreads (which I have forbidden myself to make again because I despise the process! LOL).
thank you!!!

Thanks everyone!
Dipping actually works lovely on this stuff - 613/613A is a great colour to work with when dying.

Re: No-Blend Transitional Dread (Synth Hair Dye Tutorial)
Oh, THANK YOU!
I tried a dye recipe last year but obviously wasn't paying attention because I left out the methyl hydrate!
Now I'm inspired!
I think I'll have a go at making some traditional trans dreads in #1>snow white and experiment in dip dying the white ends in different colors! I'm sure with the spray bottle you could achieve a neat tye dye sort of effect.
Do you steam seal your dreads?
If so how much of the dye stain, if any, did you loose in the process?

No problem - the Methyl Hydrate was a personal addition that I added after doing some experimenting.FASD wrote:Oh, THANK YOU!

I do steam seal, but when working with dyed synth, I wear rubber gloves because some does come out. Provided you've heat sealed it well with a dryer and rinsed a good deal out, it's not much, but you have to be careful to remove as much excess pigment. Otherwise the moisture + excess pigment could wick upward in the dread when steaming, making the dread look a little strange.

Wow! That makes my life so much easier. Thank you!
I'm wondering though, have you tried to paint with two colors? I was thinking you could take white hair and dye the top one color and then the bottom a second color? Or even a third? Would the paint bleed together or do you think it would work?

actually i think some fantastic effects could be achieved if the pain colours DID bleed together - like blue to pink with a purple transition where the 2 merge..
wanna see more hehe!

Yeah, that would probably end up looking pretty spiffy. Although if you used two colors like pink and bright green, it would probably blend into... brownish? That might not be too attractive xD

Re: No-Blend Transitional Dread (Synth Hair Dye Tutorial)
How long did you have the color stay in before you soaked it in cold water?
Can you keep the left over dye? The red bottle you have will it keep so you can use it later or is it a one time kinda thing like normal hair dye?
This sounds awesome, its like another way to dye jumbo hair. I love the color selection but something there is just another color I want and perhaps could make myself by dyeing it myself.

Re: No-Blend Transitional Dread (Synth Hair Dye Tutorial)
Hello .I really love this but I have one question.
I have a light blue wig, could I be able to dye it black using this method?
I dye my hair purple regularly, and I love it. But no one will hire me..its not really accepted here.
So I figured maybe I could dye my wig and wear that to work!
please help >.<'

I'm not terribly chemically inclined, but I was wondering if there is anything that could be substituted for the methyl hydrate. I cannot find it anywhere and no one seems to have any idea what I'm talking about when I ask about it (I've called it by several different names too--wood alcohol, methanol, methyl alcohol, wood spirits, etc). I'm going crazy here, lol.
