I have always wondered if the super smooth dreads would be stiffer. Do you think using the hair straightener method on wool dreads would have the same effect?

I have doubts about letting wool touch a hair straightener, so I don't think it'll work.. If it's roving, I really don't care if they're smooth or textured as long as they're well felted.

I tried using a straightener when i was first making dreads with wool but i never thought to twist the straightener and the dread as I was sealing! lol. Maybe I will have to give it a try and compile a little gallery of my findings. I'm being very experimental with the way I am making them now, so it couldn't hurt to try I guess. But yes, I saw how you were twisting it and it dawned on me.... maybe that's why they looked so horrible at my first try!

It reminds me of the first dread I ever made with a hair straightener, they were crispy as all hell...Yuck.

Thank you so much for posting this video it helped me a great deal. I am working a set of dreads and they were fluffy when I finished, lots of hairs and I kept thinking "What am I doing that they are so fluffy and not smooth like all the pictures." So I was trimming the sides and that makes them itchy!

I am so happy to hear not to worry about it so much and also to see the cloth attatchment on your steamer. I have a very similar steamer to the one in your video so I am going to hunt down the cloth bit [if it didn't get thrown out -sad face-] and give that a shot!

I always use a wet washing cloth wrapped around the dread, and then I steam with a hair straightener. And i got confused about the fuzz, lol. So I tried it without a wet cloth, and now they are crispy And I still have (crispy) fuzz
(I'm glad it's just a trial!)

Oh. Just another question: When I twist the dread, there isn't so many fuzz, but after the steaming process, it's fuzzy as hell. Do I have to use a silky cloth?

Yeah, do use the upholstery attachment when sealing. The jet just makes them fuzz over!

All hail the fuzz! I love fuzz, I hate it when people ask me to make them reeeeeally smooth dreads, omg like the fuzz goes up after a while of use anyway, why bother!! Great video!

I love the texture of your dreads

yes even smooth dreads have fuzz (; but its kinda different, you can cut that off if you like and the dread wont fall apart.

just for the record i use a regular steamer without any attachment, for all the different styles i make. the difference is in the twisting, for smooth dreads you have to twist harder and smooth down the hair while you twist it.
theres no trick just a lot of practice.

i never used a hair straightener and i dont recommend it to anyone because it melts the hair and the dreads became crispy and they would even stick together like velcro.

smooth dreads are stiff to start with but not crispy if you know what i mean, and they soften up as you use & wash them but dont become too fuzzy.

i dont like that stiffness anymore even though its not permanent, thats why i tend to do more natural style dreads recently.
