Metallic/Sparkly Dreads with Pics
I was reading another post about making roving sparkly and someone suggested that you'd probably able to use Angelina in making synth dreads, so I thought I'd try it out, and it works.
You will need Angelina which is a fine metallic fibre that becomes sort of like a glue once its hot and sticks to whatever you're making. I decided to try a lovely peacock blue/green to match the blue KK I had lying around.
First I backcombed a dread as normal.
Then I took a pinch of angelina and placed it on my dread, then I used a crotchet needle to put it 'into' the dread (a felting needle would probably be better but I don't own one)
(You can see it in this photo as a sort of grey, once it's been heated the grey goes away)
After trying it a few times, There are two methods.
If you want a swirl of metalic (a bit like a loose candycane with half kk and half angelina) just leave it in the lengths it comes in and put it in the middle of one side of the dread, and the same on the other. When twisting, make sure that the angelins part is on the outside of the dread as you go down. seal as normal.
If you want a more subtle, general glittery dread it's best to seperate the angelina rather than leave it in a thick length, which will let bits poop out all over the place. Twist and seal as normal.
Mine could do with refinement, but I'm not a master dreadmaker!

Haha! what a typo... It's funny because you find the fibres everywhere, and I'm pretty sure one of my cats tried to eat some, so it could come true!VixenSingsBlack wrote:Angelina fiber poops? I'm sorry I had to say!madebs666 wrote: which will let bits poop out all over the place

It looks great - I just don't know what it is! And how to find it in Denmark, since I don't know what it's called here.
Do you have a link to an online store, that sells the stuff??
I tried to make a search, but Angelina Jolie came up all the time!

Love it. I actually posted a question regarding Angelina fibre not too long ago. Glad to hear that it works well. I definitely have to try it out soon.

Re: Metallic/Sparkly Dreads with Pics
They do look beautiful I must say...
My only worry is how they feel against the head...
How itchy is that fibre against the skin? I had some beautiful dreads originally intended for falls - they had glitter thread in them and i ended up having to take them out and sell them as they scratched against my head and made it red raw....

Re: Metallic/Sparkly Dreads with Pics
I have some angelina fiber and it does not strike me as itchy at all. Granted, I've not worn it as an install...
EDIT: I take the back! My Mardi Gras dreads had Angelina fibers in them. I didn't even notice! Now that was spread out in the dread, instead of lumps like this. Could be different.

Good to know it works better with synthetic than it does with roving dreads!

It's a plastic fiber used with wool to spin sparkle into yarns or felt into projects. They sell it at places that also sell roving and yarn.Forbiddance wrote:what exactly is Angelina ? where in the U.s might they sell it?

Re: Metallic/Sparkly Dreads with Pics
wow how did I never think of this...
angelina isn't very itchy at all...its carded into wool for spinning pretty often, and so will spin or felt up with wool as well
you can find it on ebay and etsy pretty easily if you don't have specialty wool shops nearby

Re: Metallic/Sparkly Dreads with Pics
reminds me of the sparkly elysee dreads- I love it!
I used it a few time with roving and wool twists but that was some time ago and I have no pictures.
I think it works really well

Re: Metallic/Sparkly Dreads with Pics
Wow so THAT's what the sparkly stuff is! I've got a pair of falls that I've had for almost 6 years that i got off a friend who bought them off eBay (yup one of those sets that have been around for a while) and I've always wondered what it was.
Now that I know I can make sparkly dreads ^___^
thanks heaps!

This is a really unique idea, I've never even thought of making 'sparkly' dreads. I'll have to try this some time or something similar to it! Thank you for sharing!

This is VERY clever! Out of curiosity, do you want to buy "heat bondable" angelina, or... er... "not heat bondable" angelina?
