Fluffy|Light|Poof Dreads?
all righty, this has been a question of mine before but i never found the results i was looking for.
what i want, so desperately is some gorgeous dreads that are not sealed so tight, but are light and fluffy but sturdy as well. does (and can) anyone have the know how to post a tutorial on this?
i have been playing with so many things but mine just come out, well, annoying.
example: (unfortunately i only have one )
see how they are so light, fluffy but sturdy... i believe they have been sealed and then palm rolled(?)
if anyone could post a descriptive tut. with pictures, i would so be in your debt.
p.s. i would love to find out or remember who it was who made these dreads. they are so gorgeous!!! your technique haha, lol. for some reason i said that all in a french accent in my head....

I'd like a tut too!
My palm rolled dreads are supposed to look natural.
I'd like to maybe make something like Nevermind Creations one day.

Re: Fluffy|Light|Poof Dreads?
I just googled Nevermind Creations, and whooooooa! How did I never hear of her before? I especially love the criss-crossy accents on some of the poofy dreads. and this fringe:
Crazy!
Anyway, ANNloses (eternalsummerdesigns.com) makes lovely big thick dreads, not as loose and poofy as the example you posted but it was still the first thing that came to mind.

Heh, those candycanes look like my first dreads o.O
I remember someone from the last board asking about that kind of dreads, I think your best bet is palmroll them and then to seal them lightly with a hairdryer. But I bet they aren't as sturdy as the look, since the strength comes from twisting while sealing.

I think there would be more strength in backcombing than in twisting however, because of what happens with Elysee star dreads.Phoenix wrote:Heh, those candycanes look like my first dreads o.O

Plus with a hairdryer you'll be melting the strands together.
I think it just depends on how much you backcomb and how much you seal.

Re: Fluffy|Light|Poof Dreads?
I just had a go comparing a pallrolled dread to a sealed dread and the sealed dread is definately going to take more wear and tear.
(borrowing a picture from MissAnthropik, hope you don't mind..)
These were sealed with a hairdryer.

Re: Fluffy|Light|Poof Dreads?
okies, heres quite a long way to do it, but it works
make a normal double ended dread, set seal loosely with a straightener or iron
loose enough that the dread isnt stiff and looks like it wants to unravel a bit
then unravel that dread, and back comb it again
for whatever reason, when you back comb the second time with an unraveled dread, they tend to be poofier
then palm roll
this will give you that look
and you want to use a bit more hair with these dreads, thats what causes them to fluff up more
making 3-5 to a pack of jumbo KK

Re: Fluffy|Light|Poof Dreads?
ok.
so once i changed combs..
i backcombed.
poured boiling water over the dreads (rather than use my steamer)
and then palmrolled til they lost a lot of the water.
then i backcombed them again..
they aren't quite waht i was looking for, not so much wispy and dreamy but more like natural real deads...
i swear they came out better then they look here, i wore them for a couple days before i took this pic.. sorry!!
but you get the general idea, just use your imagination..

Re: Fluffy|Light|Poof Dreads?
When I saw those dreads they inspired me too.
So I made an attempt at them.
For me, I found that they turned out really well when I backcombed them, and sealed them with a hairdryer WITHOUT twisting them. And then backcombed them again, and sealed them with the hair dryer again. Also to finish the ends I twisted them a bit and held the hair dryer over/under them for a minute.
If you want I can get a picture up tomorrow?

Re: Fluffy|Light|Poof Dreads?
Mine in that picture, and all the ones i make like that are backcombed to hell and back, then not twisted, the hairdryer just run over them with then being squashed down a bit, then I twist the wispy ends and seal those well.
That's pretty much it.
I do do palm rolled dreads but they aren't anywhere near as poofy as doing them that way, well not with the same amount of hair anyway. In fact even so I can't get them to look as poofy as that with palm rolling - Palm rolling kind of knits them in tighter, giving a more natural looking dread.

No, those giant swirls (instead of tight ones) like Nevermind does. (Cypherlox does them too)
Like the one on the left.
I can't twist like that for crap! LOL.
I love it <3

Re: Fluffy|Light|Poof Dreads?
Ah, well I think she would do those with light twisting as well, and as you san see she twists more tightly at the tips. I would think she would backcomb each colour seperately and then backcomb them slightly together before twisting so they stay together, but she might just hold the 2 colours next to each other when she backcombs, then twist lightly.

Re: Fluffy|Light|Poof Dreads?
Just wanted to post a pic of a dread I did using MissAnthropik's method + some slight changes. This one was my first attempt, so I'm sure they're only get better, but I find the method works really well and is lots of fun to do. Plus, you can always go back and re-backcomb if it's not good enough. I probably backcombed mine an extra 2 or 3 times, and I'm known to really backcomb the heck out of things in the first place.
Anyway, here it is, plus my cat trying to eat it. (This is also the first DE dread I've ever done.) I also apologie for the poor pic quality. I took it with my cellphone.
Just to clarify the differences in my method, I'll explain exactly what I did:
- Backcomed the dread 'to hell and back', as MissA explained.
- Twisted very gently and sealed lightly with boiling water.
- Untwisted and backcombed more for extra fluffiness.
- Sealed with a hairdryer.
- Backcombed again because I wanted even more fluffiness.
- Sealed with hairdryer again.
- Twisted ends and sealed tightly with boiling water.
- Trimmed excess hair from ends.
Took a lot of steps, but I like how it turned out, and like I said, they will only get better from here.
EDIT: Here's the NEAR finished product (I only say 'near' because the white ones are still a bit loose from me rushing them in time to wear to a concert. They're being fixed up this week.):
