WANTED: Recommendations for glue for hair clips & jewelry.

Post by IKickShins » Sat Oct 31, 2009 1:01 am

I recently found a source for some really cool charms and pendants and stuff and I want to glue them onto snap clips to make barrettes. I know from experience that hot glue sucks -- I've bought handmade and manufactured stuff with what appeared to be hot glue and they always have fallen apart after fairly minimal wear and tear. I need something that will hold better than that, and I figure with so many crafty geniuses about that someone here would be able to help :)

So.. what's a good glue to use to make these? The charms are all plastic and/or resin and I'll be mounting them on metal snap clips, possibly also the kind of snap clips with the gel stuff on top like these: http://ikickshins.net/images/a_snapclipstwotone.jpg

General recommendations are welcome as well as specific brands. Anything that would point me in the right direction would be great.

Hey,

Well ive been making clips for a while now from resin and sticking them on barratts... i use Araldite... Get the red and white tubes, they give you enough time to work with it after mixing and stick so strong they'd survive a nuclear attack :)

Good luck :)

I use super glue to stick my bows and fascinators to the clips. They seem to hold up fine.

I have heard araldite is the stuff to use. But it STINKS! No really, use in a well ventilated area.

Thanks for the suggestions!

I've got some super glue here already so I'm going to go with that. I just ordered the little charms on Saturday so hopefully they'll be here soon so I can try it out!

I've tried gorilla glue but it didn't work very well for me. it Exapnds a bit & get messy, plus it takes forever to dry and 1/2 the time my item slip around on the barrette before the glue dried.
I actually drill holes into most of the stuff I make barrettes out of then buy tiny little screws at home depot and drill a hole into the back of the barrette and fasten the item to the barrette with the screw. Not sure if that's an option for you but it's what works best for me. Doesn't hurt that my hubby's got a drill press in the garage though - getting holes into those french clip barettes sucks!

I third superglue. It may take some experimenting to get the "right kind" as they have many different functions. Some are better for smooth plastics, some better for rough materials--just try a few, and do a self test run.
