I posted it in Chat;

Easy as pie to make.

You will need One ball 100g of basic chunky knit, and One 100g ball of Double knit.

1 pair of 8mm straight needles.

1 knitting darning needle

--

Cast on 60 stitches, knit one, purl one.

Carry this pattern on until you have reached your desired length - but not at the end of the ball!!

To finish, knit two together, do this until you have reduced your stitches to either 2 or 1, chop the wool and thread through.
Pull wool tight, and sew the two sides together. Turn the other way and voila a dread hat :D

Same again with size of wool / quantity, and needle size :D

Design best worked with 2 colours ^_^

EG: Colour 1 = White / Colour 2 = Blue

Cast on 20 stitches in Colour 1, work 10 rows in Knit 2 Purl 2.

Change to Colour 2 and work 5 rows - knit 2 purl 2

Change back to colour 1 and Work 5 rows in Knit 2 Purl 2

Colour 2 5 rows Knit 2 Purl 2

Back to colour 1 and work 3 rows Knit 2 Purl 2

Cast off.

Remember to make 2!

To sew up: Use length of main colour [Colour 1] Sew up to the side up to the end of colour 2 pt 1, then sew only 1 side of colour 1 [inbetween colour 2 sections], once you have got to the end of the Colour 1 section, start sewing both sides together from Colour 2 to the end of the wrist warmer :D

Quick and simple; I can make a pair in 3 hours.

Id say it meant knit a stitch purl a stitch then you get teh nice ribbed pattern :)

knit a row, purl a row gives you that sort of zig zag pattern you get on most jumpers doesn't it??

it's been a while

That just gives a variation on the rib stitch I think :) I've only been learning a little while myself after my mum re-taught me! We are doing slip stitch next week woo! hehe :D

Knit one stitch, purl one stitch gives the moss stitch, which is a nice variation, but more work
Knit one row, purl one row gives the zigzag pattern on one side, and the simple stitch pattern on the other ;)

Along your row if you want it ribbed: knit 2 purl 2 -> til end of row; then on the second side purl 2 knit 2 -> til end of row. Depends on if your last 2 stitches on the first row were knit or purl, least then you can decide if you want to do them as moss stitch or ribbed. :)

Just wanted to add - that 'knit a row purl a row' is called Stockinette Stitch.. just so's ya know.
..my mum got me a knitting book for my birthday :D

Thanks for these patterns, Chrissy - Now I just need to work out how to taper it just right and then leave a gap in the end for dreadies to poke through... shouldn't be too tricky!

I put it easy for everyones ;) I know what Stocking Stitch is :P *ners*

I haven't done one where you can leave the dreads to pokey out the end. I'll try and get a pattern for that sorted out tonight :D

Oh, I knew you'd know :p
The MiL calls it Stocking Stitch too, but I've always seen it called Stockinette Stitch.. not that it matters at all, lol.

I think they're called head tubes.. or something? Or maybe that should be dread tube?
Anyway, I've got my mate's head measurement now, so I'm just making one from scratch to see what I can come up with.
