Dread Perms?

Post by ..::AtomicLox::.. » Fri Jul 31, 2009 6:02 pm

I'm curious if any of you have either gotten a dread perm or done one on a client. Personally I'm a fan of letting things progress naturally (not to mention I'm not hugely fond of perm solution in general) However, I work in a fairly high-end salon in a "progressive" town and I do get a lot of clients that are curious about dreadlocks and all their different options. I'd like to keep myself informed. ;)

Specifics:
How was the overall experience? Do you prefer the "perm" or "natural" method?

Pros/Cons?

Is there a particular perm solution/brand that is advisable?

Tutorials? Anyone know of good ones?

Thanks in advance!!

Personally I would not recommend anyone get a dread perm. But to each their own. I did a dread perm on myself once and it turned out horrible. I used the wrapping method, which is where you that some string or weaving thread and wrap it around you backcombing. I believe you can find the tutorial on dr locks web site. But the only thing I have to say is to make sure that the strings are TIGHT, or it won’t turn out right. Ill post a pic of my fuzzy dread mistake at the end. Here are some pros and cons, as well as maybe thing you should look out for when you’re thinking about getting a dread perm.

First off pros

Some pros of getting a dread perm is that it is instant.
You don’t have to worry about a lot of stray hairs that get loose out of backcombed dreads.
And you don’t have to deal with wax. (Wax can get really nasty if you don’t use it right.)

Some cons of a dread perm are

Your dreads will have a very dry and fried feeling to them. Kind of like if you bleached your hair for the second or Third time.
And if you’re doing the wrapping method, if the strings are not tight enough you will just end up with a fried frizzed out puff ball on top of your head.
On top of that the hair you perm hair never seems to lock up if you try and save the mess.
As for the method of wrapping them around perm rods I have no idea how that would turn out. But I imagine not good.

Well I hope this was help full. :i2: ^.^

ok so im sorry for the bad quality of the image. but you kinda get a idea. i just dyed my root in the pic so they look a little weird. sorry also I forgot to tell you is that with my dread perm I left it in for 5 months hoping it would get better. But it didn’t, my growth I had after the dread perm was half the size of the of the perm section. I just got so fed up I brushed them out.

Thanks so much for your input!
*tucks some of that info away for future use*

Really this is not all bad, as I'm sure a couple cons can be at least remedied a bit by using specific kinds of perm solution.

I'm sorry they didn't work out, but the look is fab on you!!

My experience with dread perms was pretty positive, the only con I think of is that it does make your hair drier/more brittle, and since you can't condition dreads there's not much you can do to remedy that. The pros were that it is a pretty instant method and you skip alot of the awkward phases of maturation.

industrialbaby, I'd like to hear more about your special method of making insta dreads.
