Adding synth SEs to real dreadlocks

Does anyone know a tutorial for adding synth SEs to real dreadlocks?
I've had a look through here but can't find what i'm looking for.
I understand that you need to put a hole in the real dread top, then loop the SE through. But I can't for the life of me work out how, pictures would make my life a lot easier.

One option is to poke the SE's hole up thru the dread root from underneath, then stick the SE end thru the SE loop and pull it all the way thru.

I don't really like this method for myself as I like to leave my roots alone to knot up.

Personally, I put my real dread thru the SE's loop, position it so that the SE is laying on top of my dread, and then just put an elastic around both right under the SE loop. It stays quite secure and also gives me a bit more control on how the dreads lay.
