Experimenting... lox lamp.

Post by dreadviolet » Fri Apr 22, 2011 6:36 pm

Some time ago I experimented on creating a lamp using tubular crin as a material. Well...

Image

The light that this lamp creates, is unexpectedly subtle light pink. Not really an illuminating lamp, it's more atmospheric light that comes out.

Edit. Light on.

The crin is attached to a metal frame.

As long as it didn't pose some fire hazard, that's one of the cooler things I've seen done with crin!

Dear Vex88, there's metal frame in every lampshade made of fabric. ;) Metal needs a bit more to melt...

This... creation has been on several hours.

I didnt say the metal melted :p I just thought if the bulb warmed the metal then it might melt the crin as I dont think its designed to be exposed to heat. It's good that it doesnt though :)

If that would be the case, then every fabric lampshade would be in fire. The heat should really be much much more to be able to conduct such a long way. They are really not so close to each other. (Go to some lamp boutique shop and take a look of the structure of an oldfashioned lamp frame that was desined to be attached on top of the bulb).

This is possibly the first and only thing I've ever seen made from crin that I have actually liked. At this point, I honestly didn't think that possible. So thank you and well done!
What, that? It's a spade.

It's lovely.

I'm not a fan of crin - at all, but it looks very futuristic and I like that, plus it's unique too. Great way to change a boring lamp!

fabric is not plastic though. I was just asking as you said "The crin is attached to a metal frame.". It was just a question.

It's wonderful lit up.

I'm guessing as long as you don't use a 100w bulb it'll be fine ;)

yeah this is basically badass and I want one. I bet experimenting with different colors would be cool, as it looks like it might kind of cast different colors depending on the crin?

as to the light looks like some of the crin itself is pinkish in the first picture unless I'm crazy  whatever the reason it looks fabulous!

totally agree  It would be really cool to have a bunch of these maybe on a wall like a school of jellyfish. I'm thinking of all sorts of awesome decorating ideas now, damnit  I think it would also look really cool if the lox were cut like asymmetrical, short on one side and long on the other at an angle... ach. I wants one.

The colors used are white opal, silver and black-white opal stripe. I was expecting more greeninsh, the opal seems greenish to me, and that's why the pinkyness was a surprise.

At first I wanted to make this only white, but then quite soon I realized this creation needs LOTS of lox, and I needed to use what I happened to have at the moment.

Heh, better not use incandescent bulb at all, they are anyway gonna be banned soon. (Luckily!)

This was designed to be used with a bulb-shaped led or bulb-shaped fluorescent lamp as a light source. They don't heat up as incandescent bulb does. There's actually a bulb-shaped haloge inside it now, but because of the shape of a exterior of the lamp and smallness of a halogen, it doesn't get so hot either. However I recommend using more energy saving options than halogen (which is gonna be banned too - luckily).
