Garbage Pail Kids Socks

Post by Gromidez » Fri Apr 01, 2011 11:32 am

aka the socks of life-sucking

These socks were commissioned by a friend and took me about a month to make from design phase to finish. Hand-knit knee-high socks for size 11 1/2 male, with duplicate stitched design. The guy's name is Jian (pronounced Ian) and his favorite GPK growing up was Alien Ian, hence the way it's spelled on the socks.

I had to do some dumbing down of the design and color palette to make it feasible.

Luckily he loved them, or I would have punched him in the face after all the work I put into these :P

Enjoy!

Yup, knit in the round on 4 double-pointed needles.
Thanks :)

Totally amazing! I knew which card it was before scrolling all the way down as I'm a big GPK nerd. I'd be pleased as punch to get something like this <3

They were commissioned as a gift by Jian's boyfriend. So when he first open the present he saw the spaceship one first and was like "A...Christmas sock...with spacesh- OH!" when he saw the Alien. Then he got really excited lol

Working on socks can be right buggers!

They look gorgeus. What yarns was it you used - did you stick to Red Heart?

I used a sport weight acrylic Hobby Lobby brand called "I Love This Yarn"

Ooo. If I have an American on the swap I'm about to undertake I'll have to ask for a ball of that as well :P

I only just moved to a state that even has Hobby Lobby, so I was completely unaware of the phenomenon until a couple months ago. But on my first trip to the store I was found standing, mouth open, in the yarn aisle in front of the MASSIVE selection of worsted weight acrylics (the exact yarn as the Super Saver, pretty much) going "I love this yarn? What is this? Oh, it's the Hobby Lobby brand... Oh. Oh my god. Its. so. soft.... I LOVE THIS YARN, TOO!"

It is, however, slightly more expensive. So while the Super Saver is roughly $2.80 a skein, the ILTY brand is $4 for (I think) a little less yardage. Also, unlike SS, the ILTY has dye lots. Despite this, I am still considering a change over to ILTY for my product because I think it will give added appeal to my plushies and wearables while still being less expensive than wool/cotton/etc.
