I'm really happy with it. I left yesterday just as he was starting it and I hadn't got a clue what it would look like. It's like free advertising as the figures are all looking and pointing up the stairs.

That's really sweet, I'm guessing you can't find him and say thanks really with this sort of thing.

So did you know what he was doing? I mean, you knew Banksy was going to make some awesome outside your shop?! THAT'S AWESOME! I wouldn't have been able to go home. I would have stayed and watched him!

It's actually inside the shop, the guy who owns the shop knows him and invited him in. I was really excited to see what it would look like the next day.

That is very cool if, and I don't mean to sound skeptical, but if it is definitely him... how come the guy who owns the shop knows who Banksy is when apparently even his own parents think their son is a painter and decorator?

I don't mean to sound disbelieving it's just that he goes to such effort to keep his identity a mystery, it seems odd that he has gone this far in revealing it. OTOH I suppose some people have to know who he really is...

whether it's him or not is kind of an aside though, cause it looks way cool whatever!

Seriously, a lot of the 'mystery' stuff about Banksy is quite funny. He's very well known in Bristol, still has a lot of friends there and his mum and dad definitely don't think he's a painter and decorator - although I know he has said that in interviews!
Before he got really popular he was quite a fixture at a lot of the free parties that were held in Bristol in the '90's, drank in the Farm pub in St. Werburghs and lived in Easton. He has however, always been the master of self promotion and it's really impressive how he's managed to create and maintain this mystery thing for so long!
It's more than possible the shop owner knew him from way back when he still used to be accessible to us mere humans.
I've mentioned this in the chat thread before, when Banksy was mentioned but just thought I'd post a picture of the piece Banksy (although a whole load of us helped him) did on my yard wall in Sevier street, St. Werburghs in '96. 'The New Pollution' was a memorial for a mutual friend called Abi - unfortunately my ex and I sold the property in 2002, and developers knocked it down in 2006.
