Visting USA, advice? Anyone from New Orleans?

Post by Shedandy » Thu Oct 27, 2011 9:18 pm

Heya there guys!

I know this isn't a travel forum but since I feel like I have a lot more in common you you lovely ladies and lads I feel like I would get better advice here. I was also wondering about options for buying some Kanekalon while I'm in the USA as postage to Australia is costly. I am thinking more chain beauty stores in the spots I will be visiting.

The other part I am especially wanting advice on is traveling in New Orleans as I will be by myself on this part of the journey and I am a bit nervous about it. I was advised by a few people to maybe not to travel alone there because of crime rates, but I have always wanted to visit New Orleans. It just seems to have such a beautiful culture and history and I am pre-planning and will have my wits about me so I am going anyways. It will be over Christmas too (from the 23rd of December to the 29th)

As for the rest of my trip....
:i2: -Leaving Australia to head to USA on November 28
:i2: -California, 3 weeks road tripping in with the girls. Probably going to LA, Las Vegas, San Fran, Yosemite and Maybe an 2 night cruise from LA to Mexico.
:i2: -New Orleans on Dec 23 (thinking I will book accom in the French Quarter as it seems safest and its closer to things)
:i2: -Miami on Dec 29th, New years with Contiki and I leave for Aus on the 2nd of Jnuary

So any cool shops? (I Would love to get some rockabilly gear) anything hair related to vist? any good clubs? Any money saving tips? any safety advice? Anything you just personally love? Weird and out there stuff is great!

Also to say thank-you for reading and because this post is probably boring you all here is a pet goth rock with yarn dreads. (She looks like an egg but she is a painted rock, with pebbles for boobs and serious booty) Also hot glue for arms lol

I'm in Olympia, Washington, smallish town south of Seattle. I've been to some of the places you are going.
San Fransisco - going to be cool and rainy that time of year but it's a fabulous city. Lots to see, GREAT food, good hostels and public transportation.
L.A.- Not really my kind of place but I'm kind of a hippy. Nice weather, public transport SUCKS, loads of fake boobs. Disneyland is worth going to and a cruise to Mexico sounds fun. I've traveled a lot in Mexico and I highly recommend it, very nice people, good food, and lovely beaches. You will there when the humpback whales come to the Sea of Cortez to mate. If you can swing a whale watching tour do it
Las Vegas- Disneyland for gamblers. Not much to do unless you have lots of money.
Yosemite- Very cold and snowy when you will be in the U.S., parts of the park may be closed due to heavy snowfall. I recommend the Grand Canyon instead it's not to far from Vegas.

My area is pretty depressing that time of year. It gets dark at 5:00pm and rains all day. People drink a lot here in winter:)

Jean pretty much nailed it. I might consider ordering from Ikickshins.net and having it shipped to one of your girlfriends so you can pick it up when you get here. :) Sarah's blended shades are second to none!

I love California! You can find some really awesome people there, you just have to look a bit harder. If you make it further south to San Diego, they have so much free and fun things to go check out. If you trapped in Lala land, check out Venice beach, there is usually a lot of music and fun times.

You can go to ways with Vegas, the gambler route or the site seeing route. My hubby loves to gamble, Caesars Palace is his fav. I liked seeing the pirate show, dolphins, roller coasters, and The Beatles Love.

New Orleans, hubby said Bourbon street.

Not sure about Miami.

Sounds like an awesome trip you have planned!

I am keener to go to Mexico now. I Would love to go on a whale watching tour, will have to see what the girls think. (I am at least a little part hippy myself lol) We should be going to Grand Canyon, people keep saying a helicopter tour of it is worth it even though it is expensive. Don't know how we are going to get to Yosemite and Lake Tahoe though as I don't think you can bring rental cars in the snow lol But snow is fairly novel to us so should be fun.

I don't have an address in the USA to send it to but I was actually thinking of placing my next order with Ikickshins to Australia (you know when I finish being several kinds of broke from this trip lol)

Awesome, glad to hear it ^_^ I'll have to look into San Diego, I think there was a possibility of going there anyways. Free things are always good I'll be less in debt then hahah Yeah defiantly going to Tourist route in Las Vegas, where are the roller coasters and the pirate show? I was looking at the Dolphin Sanctuary Sigfried and Roy wasn't it? We want to go see Zumanity, its like a raunchy Circ De Solie. Has a really good pole dancer in it and as my friend is a pole dance instructor its a must lol. It would also be pretty cool to get a room Near bourbon Street, I am not sure how big the French Quarter is so hopfully it will be easily walkable to there anyways.

Thanks again guys!

I'm sorry, I don't have anything to add other than I'm quite jealous of your trip!

I did though want to say that I'm sure one of the mods on here (VixenSingsBlack) is from New Orleans and I'm sure she'd be able to help you out - perhaps PM her?

Enjoy your trip!

I just got back from Vegas last night and I definitely recommend seeing at least one show while you are there. I wanted to see Zumanity but I was with my mom and I think she might have keeled over dead, lol. Last time I was there a few years ago we saw Le Reve and it might be the best show in the city! But even besides shows, the list of things to do in Vegas is pretty infinite. I suggest at least just walking through the Bellagio, Paris and Caesar's Palace casinos, they are absolutely stunning inside!

It might be worth looking into staying at a bed & breakfast while you are in New Orleans, even just for one night. It's a bit more expensive, but it's such a wonderful experience getting to stay in a beautiful old style house and eating delicious Cajun-style breakfast. And definitely check out Bourbon St! You can eat and drink until you explode!

If you are looking to buy some KK, I think Sarah from IKS lives in Cali so you might even have the option of picking it up if you are going to be in her area. Might be worth shooting her a message, she has the best selection of colors anywhere!

Hope you have a blast on your trip! Sounds like you girls will have one hell of a time! :D

The roller coaster was at New York New York, the Pirate show is outside the Mirage, I think... There are tons of free shows going on too, and if you like to look at things like I do, there is an endless supply. There's some awesome gardens, lions at MGM. I did go see the dolphins and it was so beautiful. You can't really do everything there, if you just google free things to do in Vegas you will get lots of directions to go. It can be a bit overwhelming, but pick the top 5 things you have to do, and consider everything else a bonus.

I'd say go to Vegas just for the sights. All of the hotels are so cool looking, trying to be better than the next.

Your trip sounds like so much fun! I stayed in New Orleans with some family last year and had a great time, I know it's a little different travelling independently but here's my input.

The French Quarter sounds like a good place as its a short walk to the city center, also there is a tram that you can catch that goes by there and I think is reasonably priced, it also goes into town. The French Quarter is also beautiful.

As you mentioned Bourbon Street is popular and always busy. I never went clubbing but went to an alt-looking pub on Bourbon St, it's painted black, on the left hand side. There's often a guy sitting outside with two tiny dwarf ponies (i'm not kidding), so that's a dead giveaway, can't remember the name though! A lot of shops have posters in the windows advertising 'underground' and alternative nights, so keep your eyes peeled. There are also these huge coupon books knocking about which give you huge dicounts on tours etc so perhaps ask the staff at your hotel where you can get one.

The food there is also fantastic so try as much of their cuisine as you can! I tried gumbo, jambalaya, some kind of chowder type thing, alligator and it was all amazing.

One last thing, although New Orleans has a dangerous reputation, i'm sure you'll be fine as long as you have common sense. Just avoid walking around quiet areas alone after dark etc. Anyway, bit of an essay, hope you enjoy your trip!

MUSIC: http://www.nolaunderground.com/main.html This is the NOLA Underground site--lots of info on the local music scene if you're interested in that. If you're looking for more traditional New Orleans Jazz you'll hear it all over the Quarter no matter what!

LODGING: Stay in the French Quarter for sure.

FOOD: New Orleans cuisine = THE WIN! Basically any place in the Quarter will treat your taste buds well, although I suggest Pere Antoine's at 741 Royal Street (504) 581-4478 and if you're into shellfish, try Drago's charbroiled oysters (http://www.dragosrestaurant.com/) . Louisiana Pizza Kitchen is damn good too (http://www.louisianapizzakitchen.com/)! Cafe Du Monde's cafe au lait and beignets is a must for every visitor to New Orleans--it's front and center of the Cathedral in the Quarter, can't miss it. (http://www.cafedumonde.com) For very late night eating, Angelli's is the place to be (http://angelirestaurant.webs.com/)--many a drunken night have I stopped for food there.

WHAT TO SEE: Haunted History Tours, especially the cemetery tour (http://www.HauntedHistoryTours.com) I also encourage you to get out of the city and go to the swamps!! New Orleans was once all a big giant swamp, so you can really experience the pre-history of our city out with the gators and fishies and snakes. One of the carriage rides should be a good education on the Quarter in general. Riding the historic Street Car for a few blocks is well worth it. If you're into bugs (by some weird chance) we have an Insectarium near the Quarter (http://www.auduboninstitute.org/visit/insectarium); they prepare dishes with worms, ants, and grasshoppers daily for you to try! If you want to experience a little Mardi Gras while you're here, Blaine Kern's Mardi Gras World is open year round; you can see the floats and history of Mardi Gras on a tour (http://www.mardigrasworld.com/). And of course the Pharmacy Museum--the oldest Pharmacy in the USA (Vhttp://www.atneworleans.com/body/pharm-museum.htm); lost of creepy stuff to snap pics of in there.

ADULT BEVERAGES: There are two drinks you must absolutely try--1 Hurricane ONLY from Pat Obriens (http://www.patobriens.com/patobriens/) and the Hand Grenade ONLY from Tropical Isle (http://tropicalisle.com/) Both places are on Bourbon Street. If you're looking for alternative entertainment and venue, try The Dungeon just off Bourbon (http://www.originaldungeon.com/).

SHOPPING: By hopping a bus you should be able to get over to Magazine street for blocks and blocks of super sweet shopping (http://www.magazinestreet.com/). In the Quarter area there is the alternative store Wicked Orleans (1201 Decatur Street, New Orleans), plus a few voodoo stop shops around Bourbon.

PHEW!! That was a lot!

Hahaha I can imagine! Wow Le Reve looks amazing! Maybe we will have enough money/time to see two shows. A bed and breakfast sounds like a good idea. Although I am not all that familiar with Cajun food and I can be a wimp with new foods, but I did try some Gumbo my friend made and it was pretty yum, although very spicy. I mean I can't go to New Orleans and not eat Cajun food! I am really looking forward to Bourbon Street ^_^

I was going to msg Sarah of IKS but it might over-complicate things as we have no real itinerary whilst in California. Thanks for the idea though. I was more looking for African hair shop/beauty shop chains that I am likely to find around. Actually I'll msg her anyways on the off-chance.

Yeah some of the hotels look pretty awesome. I wanna stay at Circus Circus or Excalibur cuz I am a big kid, only the downside is there might be to many little kids running around there lol. (I might be a big kid but if I am hungover or tired I am a pretty big grinch)

Thank you! I hope it will be ^_^ Yeah I think Ill definitely be staying in the French Quarter, although if I have enough $$ I might go stay overnight at a plantation house too. Bahaha Ill definitely be on a lookout for the black pub with a guy with the dwarf ponies, that is just to awesome and charming. Thanks for the tip on the coupon book I'll definitely ask for one. That could come in very handy. Thanks its good to hear the reassurance :) N don;t be silly I appreciate all the advice I can get, thank-you heaps.

Ohw man so many awesome links! Thank-you The Dungeon just looks so awesome! Some of the food links look pretty nice, which is good because I can be fussy sometimes (I have a few allergies and I'm not really into seafood) hahah I should stop looking at them I am hungry now. I also plan to man up and try new things when I am there, I tried vegetarian gumbo the other day and it was pretty good.
I am really looking forward to sitting Cafe Du Monde and people watching ^_^ I was looking at the Haunted History tours, good to see someone recommend them! Tossing up between the Garden district and the Voodoo one. I am keen to see Anne Rice's old house but the voodoo one looks like fun!
I am pretty keen to see the swamps and maybe vist a plantation if I have time/money. I think the Madigras museum is going to have to be a must, thank you! I really want to visit New Orleans during Mardi Gras one day but it will be great to get a taste of it while I am there this time. The Pharmacy museum looks awesome! Hahaha I am not going to have a shortage of things to do! There are a few xmas tours to. Ill stop replying to everything you have written or it will be to much to read lol Thank you so much though this is so helpful!

For New Orleans I think VSB nailed it (of course!) Cafe du Monde is a must as are the cemeteries. However, my FAVORITE thing I did in NOLA was my walking tour of the Garden District. You can reach the starting points easily from the Quarter, and there should be brochures in most hotels or online to guide you to the tours. The architecture there is SO beautiful, and there are some celeb houses included in the tour, like Anne Rice and Trent Reznor's old house.

For Miami, there are TONS of high end clubs on South Beach, as well as old Art Deco hotels in which to stay. The flavor of the city is Latin and House, and it can be difficult to find anything else, although Dubstep is growing in popularity everywhere. The clubs in Miami are some of the best and most prestigious in the world, and the music can be killer, with lots of big name DJ's in and out of the city all year. Sometimes it does not matter which one you pick, they are all amazing. I remember Mansion being a favorite: http://www.mansionmiami.com/dev/ as well as Nocturnal: http://www.nocturnalmiami.com/

However.....Miami is EXPENSIVE! In my experience (granted its been two years since my last trip) a mixed drink will cost you $12.00 USD. Club cover can be anywhere from $20 and up, reaching sometimes $70 if a celebrity walks in in front of you. Food is good and fairly priced, but the clubbing experience is pricey. Pretty beaches if you are into that. Watching the sun rise on South Beach is a pretty cool experience. You'll need cab fare to get around if you hop between beaches, but everything on South Beach is pretty much walking distance.

I have a love/hate relationship with that city. The music is awesome and the places are cool. The nightclubs are like those you see in movies. But, the people can suck and the prices are gouging. Worth doing and worth seeing, but has both its pro's and its con's.

Awesome! I am keen to see the Garden district. I want to see Anne Rice's old house. I feel like I half already know it from her description in the the Witching hour. I know you can't go inside the ground any-more but sounds like the Garden district will be worth it anyways. Anything Trent Reznor related is always a plus. Was thinking of taking a Haunted History tour there.

I will be on a New Years contiki tour in Maiami, which has a open bar on NYE, so its good to know I am getting my monies worth! I have no idea which clubs we will be going to, but if I break off from the group any-time I'll keep that in mind, thanks!
