Re: Intracraniel hypertension
Is it caused by an existing disorder or is it of unkown cause?
I specialised in Neurosurgery and worked in the ICU for many years. A lot of patients with ICH ended up having surgery to put in a ventricularperitoneal shunt to constantly drain the fluid. Obviously with this, there is infection risk and if the shunt blocks it can make you very ill indeed.
We would also get patients in for therapeutic lumbar puncture too, where we would drain off some of the cerebrospinal fluid to reduce the intracranial pressure. It's unpleasant, but very effective and much better than having surgery especailly if you only get bouts every now and again.

Re: Intracraniel hypertension
Unknown cause. I've had 4 lumbar punctures( not as bad as they sound) in the last 6 yrs and 2 MRI's to rule out a tumor or meningitis/encephalitis. The therapeutic lumbar puncture does work but only for a few days, then your body just makes more fluid.halocaustic wrote:Is it caused by an existing disorder or is it of unkown cause?

dON'T RED THIS NEXT BIT IF YOU ARE EASILY GROSSED OUT
I got my neurologist to give me a vial of my cerebrospinal fluid, most folks never get to see this unless they have a horrific head injury. Looks and has the viscosity as water. I tasted it, tastes like tears:)
Mostly I'm wondering if anyone has tips for dealing with the chronic headaches and nausea. Tylenol(pracetemal) and advil do nothing for me and I'd like to avoid opiates if possible.

Have you tried ice to numb the pain away? I know it's kind of crazy, but it works for my migraines.Librarynerd wrote:Unknown cause. Re: Intracraniel hypertension
Urgh - lumbar punctures. I have also had 4 and they were horrible (3 attempts in 3 days the first time I was admitted to hospital with headaches - the second admission they managed the pucture straight away. Not fun). Not an experience I want to go through again any time soon!
Back on topic: I don't have Intracraniel hypertension, but I do have cluster headaches (and another suspected vaso-vascular disorder) and I take pizotifen nightly to help with the chronic daily headaches. When a cluster headache kicks in I take sumotriptin and I find it really helps.
The pizotifen doesn't stop the headaches completely, but between that & tramadol it certainly allows me to function normally. If you want to avoid opiates then tramadol wouldn't be for you - but pizotifen isn't an opiate, perhaps that would be one to try?
Aside from that, I find essential oils really help to take the edge of the headaches. I use a relaxing one from Neal's Yard (http://www.nealsyardremedies.com/Remedi ... Relaxation). When I have some spare cash I want to try craniosacral therapy (http://www.nealsyardremedies.com/craniosacral-therapy & http://www.nealsyardremedies.com/cranial-osteopathy). It is my aim to be as free from drugs as I can be in the future - so am really looking into natural remedies.
Chronic headaches are horrible - you certainly have my sympathy
