Words you dislike!

Post by patricia*star » Fri Apr 08, 2011 10:25 am

I just wanted to start a new thread about words that you dont like, since we have a favourite word thread.

One word in the english language really bugs me. QUAYSIDE!!

I shall explain, my OH has another band he is in and they were playing at the riverside in newcastle, which is down by the QUAYSIDE, and it got me thinking, why the hell is it pronounced KEYSIDE when it looks like QUAYSIDE??
When i was little i actually thought it was pronounced how it looks and i didnt click on until i was watching byker grove one day.

What im saying is......Why the hell is QUAY pronounced like KEY?
Unless there is a reasonable reason for this then i am going to refuse to say it as KEYSIDE, and i dont even care if people think i am a tit for saying it like QUAYSIDE because im making a stand!!!
(i do realise its a ridiculous thing to make a stand about but i dont get riled very often and when i do its for totally pointless reasons  )

If anyone can shed light onto this mystery of the english language for me it would be very helpful :D

What words get on your nerves?
The show must go on. Inside my heart is breaking, my makeup may be flaking but my smile still stays on.

Ah, english. A lovely & incredibly frustrating language.

Er, I can only think of one.

Packet

I hate the way it sounds & I'd rather say something else, like bag (bag of crisps, not p... of crisps) I don't know why, I've just never liked it.

Moist.

Ugh.

I saw someone mentioned it on the favourite word thread, and it makes me shudder every time I hear it.
Id rather be looked over, than overlooked.

I hate the word pregnant. I just always have. I don't like the way it sounds. Also chipotle. It drives me up the wall.

Crestfallen is my absolute least favorite word ever, not because of the way it sounds but what it means. Its just so damn depressing.

Capture springs immediately to mind, it's a stupid word and sounds rubbish. I dislike the "p" as it is ugly to look at and ungainly to pronounce. Bleh.

I also cannot stand clunge. As a word it sounds utterly vile.

Nursing (as in breastfeeding) ewwwwww.
Teat

DANK! Not because of what it means (similar to moist) but because somehow its a slang word for awesome here. WTF? And people use it and don't even know what it really means, I had one girl be like "It means awesome dumbass, look it up in the dictionary"  I wanted to laugh/slit her throat at the same time. I'm pretty sure that some thing that is "Disagreeably damp, musty, and typically cold" is not awesome.

Orthogonal. That work makes me cringe.
Synaesthetically (if that is even a word), it is so brown sounding that it makes me think of poo.

Oh and MOIST is also high on the list.

Take that anyway you want to. :P

I do however, hate the word "fanny". It's just so... council estate.

I don't hate any words really.

Yup haha. I love C*nt and pussy as well, but only as insults, not actually referring to ladybits.
