Chinese Translation Needed - Now with pictures!
*If this is in the wrong section, please move it, thanks.*
My Gran died a few months ago and there's this vase in her house that is apparently very very old and it has some Chinese characters on the bottom of it, and I'm looking for a translation of it. I copied the characters as best I can.
Apologies for my very scrappy version, I don't have a graphics tablet, this was all done on trackpad.
Thanks in advance for any help
Edit, this is the vase itself:
and here are the characters on the bottom:
(Bigger version here: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4150/483 ... 2278_b.jpg)
There's also a set of china with some characters on the bottom, if anyone can help. Photos here.

Re: Chinese Translation Needed
A picture of the characters might be better as if the strokes of the characters aren't right or if they aren't in the right order then they can mean something completely different! There's also different regional dialects of Chinese. You could try contacting a language department at a local college or uni

^^ Yeah I was worried about that, I didn't have my camera with me at the time. There's a chance my Dad brought it back with him last time he was there, I'll ask.
Thanks for all the offers of help though

I think Mandarin and Cantonese are the most popular but I'm pretty sure there's 4 or 5, including those, but I'm not entirely sure!

Re: Chinese Translation Needed
The characters are the same in any of the languages/dialects - written they are the same, it's just the pronunciation of them that changes. Just like in Japanese, they use the same chinese characters (as one of three ways they have of writing the spoken word), so Japanese people can pretty much read Chinese, although what it would sound like if read outloud would be unintelligible to Chinese speakers.
telling it like it is!

Its pretty hard because it's handwritten and poss Chinese ...I can prob get a Japanese person to find the kanji and translate them individually...but if it is Chinese the meaning might be lost...I will get back to you.

Re: Chinese Translation Needed - Now with pictures!
Done
年 means year
年製 years product
康 ー name of product
皿 - dish/vase
Not 100% sure on that..i know the first kanji means year, I asked the rest from a friend, she said the writing is very poor. It makes sense though, its just the product information...I wouldn't reccomend getting it as the tattoo...doesn't really make sense...whats on the vase, itsn't there a painting? wouldn't that be better...?

Re: Chinese Translation Needed - Now with pictures!
Did anyone just try to google "Chinese Pottery Marks"?
http://gotheborg.com/marks/bild/572_fullsize.jpg
The first two look awfully similar to me. I think it is just a question of scanning the WHOLE database and seeing if you can find what you are looking for.
ETA: Or see if Antiques Roadshow is still running and go ask them for an answer.

Re: Chinese Translation Needed - Now with pictures!
I did Google around but there were just too many character to check through. My head was spinning from it.
Thanks DSM, so it doesn't really mean anything? That's a shame. I wasn't thinking of having it as a tattoo or anything though...

Reply from my Chinese friend
It says Made in Hong Ning, think that might be a dynasty in the Chinese history, not a place name.

My Dad is on holiday and I didn't even know!
I just realised that sounds way off topic, before I add that I tried to get in touch with him to ask.

I think the Chinese character might be "康熙年制",which means the vase was made during the years of Kangxi(Qing Dynasty).
