The Roller Derby thread

Post by MistressH » Wed Apr 21, 2010 5:45 pm

because im sure there are more than just two of us that play now and its important enought to have its own thread! (what with it being the Best Sport in the World and all)

So..... who is in a team, who wants to be in a team and who has no idea what im talking about but likes the sound of a full contact sport on wheels? :D

i would sooo like to join a team but there are none in denmark! i skate a lot just on streets and in parks and urban areas, and having been playing with the idea of starting a team, but then we wouldnt have any to play against?

do any of you roller girls know of any good sites i could use as a resource for starting a team e.g. rules, tips and tricks and the likes? :)

Madii might have a heart attack over this lol.

I just started a Belfast team in January :D and if I can do it, anyone can so if there's not a team where you are already, MAKE ONE.

Once you start one, you'd be surprised how many start popping up, especially now Whip It is out. Other than that, you just compete against each other. I would just start by asking other teams for info, that's what I did. I know Sweden has a team so you could try contacting them first as your nearest neighbour (I think? My geography sucks..) and there's several teams in Europe and UK. After that just drum up interest! Promote everywhere offline and online and hold an interest meeting and just take it from there. You already have an edge on me with an experience in skating, I didn't really have any lol. You know it has to be played on quads right?

I'd LOVE to do Roller Derby. This might make me sounds like a total nutcase but I have this crippling phobia of having my teeth smashed in and it sounds like something that's an occupational risk of Roller Derby. However, I'm thinking of volunteering my photography skills to a local team. I'll have to get in touch with Madii about that, she's fairly local to me.

That's what mouth guards are for :D With my limited beginner knowledge, having your teeth smashed seems like a small possibility provided you have a proper mouth guard, people aren't allowed to hit you in the face and you're drilled so much to fall on your knees and stuff that you're unlikely to properly face plant. Most injuries seem to happen to the leg and bum

Wasn't there a thread like this before... :?

Anyway, I have been interested in this for a while, but as others have said, can't find a local team. I may do further research though :D

I believe there are three groups nearish to me, two in Birmingham and one in Nottingham, however all three are just slightly too far away for someone who doesn't drive to get to for training on a regular basis.

It's something that definitely interests me, a friend does it in Birmingham and loves it.

Madii you have to stop it, your muscles are stirring my loins! :P

Would your team be interested in a having a photographer about? I'm coming to the end of my photography degree so I'm not just some gawker with a camera.

Bwahahahahaha I fear the muscles.. I may need to join the war face madness, although I lack the gun show right now :( I'm always kinda jealous of the R3 velcro ha ha

Just FYI, it does take over your life and it does so quickly. VERY quickly..

Haha, someone will need to hold both my hands whilst I learn to skate but I am tentatively up for it, although I'm horribly uncoordinated.

I've not done much sport photography, a bit of football but that's it. But I would LOVE to do headshots, It has some badass creative photoshoot potential.

Oooh travel is tempting. Oh man, I could get a return to Belfast for £20. Oh man, a plan is forming...

I went to the Ryanair website. It does bump it up to £30 with online check in. But you have to travel only with carry-on luggage.

WHERE FROM? I'm trying to work out how to visit Belfast for under £70, are you sure you didn't just skip over the taxes and charges? That's where they like to anally rape you.
Oh yes, come to me children..

Is Madii visiting you then? The ferry will probably be a cheaper option.

You'd have to get to Liverpool, which could probably be done for £1 each way on the National Express if you book far enough in advance. A faff and a long day travelling but cheaper.

No can do, I can't transport my skate gear in carry-on, it falls outside of the regulations. I've found some cheap flights where it's only 9.99 for one bag in the hold so I'll probably take that option for when I finally visit Belfast (BY THE WAY HANNAH HAVE YOU AGREED THE DATES I CAN COME SO I CAN BOOK THE TIME OFF WORK YET LIKE I ASKED YOU TOO HMMMMM)
Ma bitchez are ready when you are, we're perfectly fine to work around you.

i really REALLY really want to train and do roller derby, my husband laughs and alot of people think im joking because im a really tiny girl only weighing 105lb soaking wet. but im pretty tough i think i can handle being tossed around, and i can really push around some bigger girls. but its a dream and someday i'll have a go at it.

IPA i know its played on quads, but is it always the low kind that ends at the ankle? those are cool but would be waaay harder to skate in than my above the ankle version i think... mine are more like hockey skates in the foot part..

oh and thanks for the fb link, just found that a team has just been formed in denmark (allbeit in the other end of the country) but might go and have a look there!

so excited:)
