curlies coming out during install
Does anyone else have problems with their curls coming of out during install? I am doing steam set synthetic dreads. Am I doing something wrong?

Re: curlies coming out during install
I think that's really common depending on how hard you're wearing them (no shame in wearing a kit really hard, it just proves your love!). I'm sure there are some good tips on how to avoid losing the curl, but I can't be of much help, I rarely wear them.

I typically do the curl a bit tighter at first, knowing they will fall a bit.

That's the thing I lose about 80%of the curl while putting them in. Maybe they weren't sealed properly. I'll give it another go soon though cause they are so cute. Lol. Thanks for the reply..::AtomicLox::.. wrote:I think that's really common depending on how hard you're wearing them (no shame in wearing a kit really hard, it just proves your love!). Yikes! What are you using to curl and what method do you use to seal?
I typically leave my curlies ON the rod to set and cool overnight, which really helps!

I used a broom stick and steam and left on stick for about 30 min. I think that I need to work on my backcombing and sealing cause I'm still a neebie. I think that is why they came out during the install.

I always boil when I make curly dreads. I twist mine together in pairs and drop em in boiling water and then hang em up to drip dry overnight. while they are still twisted together..
I don't untwist them until I'm ready to put em on.

d00000d you gotta leave your curlies on the rod till they are dry.
it helps a Lot, even though it seems like it shouldn't. if you want to remove them from the rod before they are dry, DONT unravel the curl, just set it down and dont hang them or mess with them till they dry !
it will make a difference for sure. goodluck

Agreed. In theory you should be able to remove them as soon as they're cool, but it really does help to wait until they're completely bone dry.

Re: curlies coming out during install
I know doclocks states you can get a velcro type tape (the side to use is smooth) so that way you can wrap the dread bit around the broom stick and secure it without worry of it sticking to the hair. I got a bag of curlers from Sally's and zip tie them around 'em, dip them in boiled water, pull them out with (clean) tongs and then let them dry overnight.
When they're dry, I stick my hanger back through the SE hole to reopen and then steam the end again.
I know that losing the curl a bit is natural and they won't be as tight as they were when you first made them curly. I think during the instal portion is having it being stretched through the rubberband as opposed to just letting it sit there.
I tried steaming at first and really just ended up with some wigglies but I wrapped the dread around my hanger and steamed while rotating, it didn't hold very well at all.

I agree with leaving them to completely dry on the rod. I routinely blast mine with cold water once cool, then throw off some of the water before leaving them to dry fully.
What, that? It's a spade.

Re: curlies coming out during install
During my curly installs, I try to wear slouchy beanie hats when I am casually out and about. It takes alot of the weight off of the dreads. With less hanging weight pulling on the curls, they last longer. There are tons of tuts out there to make these super cheap hats.
