First set of dreads...

Post by jlaynaeb » Thu Aug 18, 2011 2:44 am

So this is the first set I was actually serious about making...I need to know more about sealing the ends as I feel they are a bit to "feathery". Thanks in advance!

You will also need to backcomb much more, use half the hair of each colour on the candycane dread and twist tighter (whilst holding the dread twisted until it cools down) :)
If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask! Somebody (if not myself) will be more than happy to help. Good luck!

My problem seems to be that the more I backcomb the less I can get the dread to twist into a smooth lock :(

You might just be getting knots. It can take a while to get the hang of backcombing, but you will get it!

Not really, but your backcombed dread should be evenly matted. I don't know whether you've seen my backcombing video, but it's the most effective tutorial - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50_dAKwyG_Y

OOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! I wasn't pulling the dread apart after backcombing! That's why it kept coming out so knotted. Thanks!

I should've said this when I first read that comment, it's not always about the split, but more so manipulations to get tiny knots everywhere, evenly, rather than a huge hair ball. For longer dreads, don't do the whole length of hair at once! Start small, a few inches at a time.
