First Try at Yarn Extensions

Post by DangerBunnie » Sun Feb 06, 2011 2:34 am

Dark Red and Light Blue Colinette Mohair. Finished braids approx. 24" long. Even with frequent breaks and doing my best to get the sections consistently even, it isn't perfect. Still trying to decide if I want to keep them in and learn how to maintain them, or pull it all out and try again when my hair is a little longer. The main challenge now is what to do with the little wispies starting to fray. I might try doing decorative wraps across those sections.

Thoughts, Ideas, Suggestions?

Oh gosh I dearly want to see. Especially as you have used Colinette mohair, which is one of my favourite materials. Hope you get the pic sorted x

the braids look nice and neat- it would be nice to see them on your head to give feedback on fullness/ overall look.

Nice colour choice though :)

It looks nice and neat but I agree with LPF; get somebody to take shots of your head from different angles so we can get an idea of the length and shape of the overall 'do.

Really nice job on the braiding though and i also like your colour choice.

Thank you so much for all the input! I am still a little camera shy, hope this side shot ok. Springtime I might have more opportunities for friends to play photographer.

i really like those colours together, they really suit you. I think they look lovely, how long do you think you can wear them for?

Yay! Well done.

As this is the Critique section, my advice to you is that you don't need rubber bands for the ends. When I braid mohair, I tie the ends firmly and leave them loose, without cutting them blunt. Mohair dreads to itself, keeping the braids secure, and the ends look a lot more natural after a couple of days.

You did a great job though, especially for your first try. I'm going to guess your colour scheme is Copperbeech and Elephant's Daydream?

@MistressH~ I'm not sure how long I can keep them in, need to make a decision soon.

If I keep them in, how to I deal with the growing roots? The wispy ends of my natural hair are sticking out and it's looking raggedy, should I do decorative wraps to hide them?

@woolhairhabit~ I honestly don't remember what the color names are, this yarn has been in my stash about a decade.

Yes, I haz a yarn fetish. I knit and crochet too.

If I do decide to pull these out and try again, next time I am doing box braids. The three-plaits are starting to flatten out like ribbons. It's kinda cool, but I am beginning to like the way box braids hold their shape.

I always boxbraid yarn, it stays in so much better. For now, you can wrap a little more yarn over the root and the area where your hair is springing out to mask any regrowth and the pokey bits of hair. Your braiding technique will get better over time, you did a great job for your first go.

I have had customers leave mohair in their hair for over 6 months but I wouldn't really recommend it, unless you are looking to start your own hair dreading. For most peopke, between 8 and 12 weeks is plenty.

Thank you so much Gracey <3

I am definitely leaning more toward taking these out, doing shorter box braids, and wrapping the junction on the next set.

The only time I wrap the 'junction' (great word!) is when the natural hair is short and blunt. Usually I get to about an inch and a half from the end of the hair, split the yarns into four and the remaining hair into four, then put them together so that each section has a yarn part and a hair part. Then I continue boxbraiding and this stops the pokies in the most part.

I am notoriously bad at verbally explaining my technique and, believe me, diagrams would be even more confusing so I apologise if I have baffled you. x

Gracey, I think you explained it clear enough.

Yeah, my natural hair is short and blunt, that was part of the challenge. Tonight I am having fun pulling the braids out and wow, I'm sporting a cute little fro! Had to take a quick break to give my arms a rest before finishing the other half.
