My First Dreads Ever - SE Wool Roving (Image Heavy)

Post by CrossEyedMorgan » Thu Jan 20, 2011 11:41 pm

I've been making SE wool roving dreads
The first ones I've made weren't amazing, they have splits and I did the loops really badly

I got better towards the end, and decided to just tie the end down to make the loops, I tried a couple locking methods and just failed haha, so this ended up neater

These are the last ones I made which got a bit more of a point

Eventually going to make a full head, with the main colour being black to match my hair, and wanted to know what I could do better before I start on the next colour :)

Oh don't need a critique on the dying, I bought the roving like that haha

And I know they're different lengths and thicknesses, that was actually done on purpose. I thought it would look more natural and although I like the really pretty, perfect, same length, same thickness look with dread extensions I didn't want that look for me, at least not this time. I don't know, maybe people will think that's stupid haha.

id recommend another felt and palm rolling, as there seems to be lines in your roving and iv found another felt helps that line disappears. :)
But they look nice for the look you described your going for. Can’t wait to see a full set.

Sweeet thanks for that :)
I knew it would end with me re-felting/palm-rolling them, I got a bit lazy hahaha
Hoping to get my boyfriend in on it, so I can make new ones and he can perfect these ones hahahaha

Thanks!! XD

Felting & palm rolling probably isn't going to get rid of the cracks. A LOT of needle felting might. They look very hard to me & super thick. Honestly, I'd say start again with fresh roving. SE's can be tricky, but once you've figured it out they're easy BUT time consuming (I think anyway)

I've made SE's a few times now, here are some images:

No lines.

What I do, is take the roving at the thickness I want the end dread to be & split it in half. Then loop over a knitting needle & palm roll. To be EXTRA certain that my SE's will stay SE's I needle felt them, especially at the loop (no need to wrap wool round the top)

I felt mine in the machine, you need to stick the knitting needle back through once they're out of the wash & presto! done.

I think the problem is that you are not making a loop as such you are just folding over and then felting together...am I right?

Try twisting as you take them out of the water and them making sure you twist as you felt on the towel.

Or try the washing machine method!

Took on all your advice and they turned out fantastic (if I do say so myself haha) well, at least compared to the other ones XD

Before and after:

My latest dreads, folded over a knitting needle, twisted up and felted

I could cut those ends or something but I kind of like them, think they're kinda cute XD

Thanks heaps!
