Detangling synth wigs with fabric softener- it works!

Post by BossyLibraryLady » Sun Feb 07, 2010 1:15 am

Someone on another board mentioned using a 1:1 mix of fabric softener and water in a spray bottle to detangle synthetic extensions. So, I bought some fabric softener concentrate from Aldi for 65 cents and decided to give it a go...

My test subject was a beautiful KK Bettie Page-style wig in 1b which was snarled to the point where I was ready to cut my losses and turn it into a dread wig. While it still took a fair bit of work to get the worst of the tangles sorted, the detangler made the process much easier.

A few points to take note of:

*If you're using concentrate, make it up as per the packet's instructions, *then* dilute it 50/50 with water. Using undiluted fabric softener is too heavy and will make the hair feel a bit manky.
*If you have sensitive skin or are concerned about allergies, it's best to use clear, uncoloured softener with little or no fragrance.
*When using perfumed softener, make sure you like the smell before you go spraying it about willy-nilly; the scent will still remain once the hair is dry.

Hope someone finds this info useful. :)

Not that I've noticed. The wig I used it on isn't overly shiny to begin with. You might notice a bit of a difference in super-shiny wigs...

Thank you so much for this, it's exactly what I needed! I let someone borrow a wig and it was returned in less than ideal condition  Now I can fix it!
