Wider supplied roving - anyone know anyone?

Post by linziloop » Wed Nov 11, 2009 6:55 pm

Hi there! I'm needing to felt some especially fat wool dreads, problem is the roving i usually get isn't usually supplied wide enough to allow this and i don't want to be sticking bits together for fear of getting really obvious lines in them.

I know it's possible to get wider roving cos i found some stashed in a bag in the house, but only a tiny bit, and i can't remember who i bought it from...soooo, does anybody know of any suppliers who typically supply their roving with girth rather than length!? Lol!

I dont know how wide you normally get it or how wide you need it but I can tell you how to thicken up what you get. Take your regular roving and cut it the length you want the dread. Then take some extra roving and pull it apart into atleast three inch length and lay them out overlapping a little. Do this for several layers. You may want to do a test dread so you know how many layers you need to achieve the thickness you want. Then lay the original length of roving on this and roll it up like a burrito. Imagine in the pic below the red line is your original roving how they send it to you and the sections below is what has been torn. Roll it up. Then because it will be more fragile you want to drizzle the hot soapy water over the dread, not put it in the water and partially felt it before putting it in the hot water and felting as normal.....

to get something like this but much thicker.....

How wide would you like?
Mine comes in a fairly wide diameter.
