I would just band them in. DE's would probably work best, using an elastic to attach the roving at the center to the root (or near the root) of your natural dread, and then letting the top half fall over?

This is a client of mine who makes it look especially fantastic, and that's how she installed hers!

It's definitely possible.

Yeah, I think they look awesome. It's heaps easier to put in DEs, but if you're adding colour and don't want too much volume, I definitely think SEs are the way to go. Make the loop quite loose and pull the wool dread through the hair at the root of the real dread, then thread it through its loop and then rubber band over the lump.
Wispy ends are definitely more of a problem. You can get the taper down to a really fine point, but if you care about quality at all you DO have to felt the ends. Little fuzzy bits left look shoddy, and they tend to curl up and go weird. What could look awesome (and I haven't tried it, so I don't know how fiddly it would be) is to get a little bit of KK (or whatever) and have it running through the core of the dread and hanging out the end for properly wispy ends. And if you try this you totally have to show me how it turns out!
Anyway, here is a picture of my friend with some harlequin DEs I did her. I rather wish I had made them taper more, but I think I might have ballsed up the length a bit so I had to trim them blah blah blah but she was stoked, so yeah! (Oh, and please don't tell her I posted this photo of her, or she'll beat me up )
Good luck!
