Looking for roving dreads pics please?!?

Post by Ambar » Fri Nov 19, 2010 12:14 pm

Hi guys, From everything ive read, roving seems to be the most comfortable, warm, easy to wear etc so im trying to find some pictures of installs. Specifically natural colours, not too thick, and long (between waist and shoulder) I know where to get the wool, i think i know the technique, and i know the install....i just cannot find pics of thinner roving dreads!!

Thanks guys! BB x x x

There should be tons in the show-off section, or you could look through the individual roving galleries. I'm sure there are plenty if you don't mind having a rummage around.

Miasmahair is another seller I'd recommend looking out for, she does a lot of long kits in natural colours.

Hey hey! Yeah, roving does most certainly rule :D
Hope Meghan doesn't mind, but here's a picture of her wearing some of my dreads. They're thin, which for me is 1/4 of a width of roving.

And here's some pictures of me with some other thin ones installed (not particularly natural colours though)

Hope that helps! Looking forward to seeing pictures of yours oi! :D

Miasmahair, those are exactly what i wanna do! 1/4 width, cool....i take it the length is just how it came? are the DE or SE?

Hey! Okay, so, I have the big 1kg bumps that you just rip off the length you want (and unless you're getting them really gnarly in the washing machine will be about the same length as the dreads), but I think (from all the school holidays spent in the packing room at the Ashford factory, ha!) that a 100g bump would be one piece about 3-5m long (or I could be making this up, does anyone else know?)
Aaand, what else? Oh, okay, so they are all DEs in those pictures. For SEs that width you could split your length into 8 (cause you double them over), but for some unfathomable reason that always seems to make them thinner. So what I like to do for SEs is still split them into 4 but make the length about 1.5 times the length you want your dread to be (rather than 2 times), and then have one end coming only halfway down. I don't know, this kinda reads like retarded babble (I need a nap!), but yeah, this gives the dreads a nice taper and you have to do less splitting.
Oh, here's Letty wearing some super thin SEs, which are 1/8th of a width at the bottom and 2/8ths at the root.
Image
Oh, and the last thing (promise!) is that if you want your dreads to be of a uniform width, it's much much easier to split the roving into halves, quarters or eighths, because trying to get 5 even fifths (say) is a pain in the ass.
Er, hope that's helpful...

wonderfull, thanks!!! :i2:

Super skinnys are wicked, loving them very much! :D So im right in thinking that the bigger the "ball" of wool, the longer the length then. And stick to even numbers.....got it! ;)

Heh, I know! Okay, so they were a bit of a weirdy mix of white, natural light and skin coloured wool dyed with tea. Those are medium thickness, so half a width (or three sixths, if you can imagine). This is what they looked like back at my house :)
Image
I reckon if you want to do really natural looking dreads (if you don't need platinum blonde) dyeing over a natural light colour like this Image is bestest, cause there's a bit of variation in the colours of the individual fibres to start with.
Any more questions let me know oi!

They really are! Hoenstly, this is my first experience with wool and I absolutely cannot rave about Miasma enough. They're soft, they're comfy, they're light and they look ah-ma-zing.

Listen to that girl. She knows her stuff. I'm definitely going to be a frequent flyer ;)
