my first wrappy style dreads...

Post by Karmatica » Mon Dec 20, 2010 8:34 pm

i am working on a custom order for a friend, and she requested to have some wrappy dreads in her order. i haven't made wrappy dreads before, so i used some leftover neon magenta and black hair to practice the technique before i make them for her order.

these are the practice dreads!

7ct. SE neon magenta wrappy dreads with some black accents.

i think i am getting the wrappy technique... how do they look?

oh! and my boyfriend got me a steamer for our anniversary earlier this month! these are some of the first dreads i have made with the new steamer! i love my steamer, now that i have gotten used to it. :D

Personally I'd make the black wrappy bits a bit thicker.

agreed defonatly a bit more black as it looks a little plain for a wrappy dread :)

there is one dread hidden under some of the other dreads in the picture that has a thicker black wrap than the two in the front.
I am still trying to figure out how much hair is appropriate for the wrap... and how tight to pull it.

its all trial and error i have found, i have done only a few wrappys (i dont do alot of synthetic dreads) but the first had to little for my taste the seconds ended up like chunky braid and the thirds im quite happy with i just need to seal them :)

would love to see more pics it may help people help you ?

now personally looking at this picture i think from left to right the first one looks like a nice amount of black to red, if that make sense but i would say experiment about with your wrapping so not just one piece of hair maybe two or three i think smaller amounts of hair but three or four wraps look nice. If this doesn’t make sense say and i will find a way for it to make sense but looking at them all they look lovely and nice

(if i had pictures on my laptop i would be abe to show you)

i think when you make the wrap a bit "sloppy?" by putting in some X patterns now and then it adds more draw to it rather than just looking like a candy cane

thats my personal taste though :)

The fun thing about wrappy dreads, is there really isn't a "right" or "wrong". True that typically people tend to use thicker bits for wraps, but don't let that deter you from whatever inspires you!
Some fun things to play with would be using more than one strand to wrap (even if you're only wrapping in one direction), using more than one color to wrap with, and slightly backcombing the hair you intend to wrap with, on chunkier wraps!

i personally like the look of one direction wraps better, than criss-cross wraps...

i might try using more hair for the wrap, plus do some different colors in the wrap.
backcombing the hair that for the wrap sounds like a good idea... i might do that.

i made a few more, i might post a picture tomorrow if i have a chance...
