My first dreads *pic heavy*

Post by _transient_ » Mon May 03, 2010 7:04 pm

Hey all,
I watched/read nearly every tutorial I could find (special thanks to rivetlicker for her backcombing and sealing tuts!) and this is what I came up with.

I ordered 6 bags of hair from I Kick Shins on a Tuesday, but by Friday I was way too anxious to wait until the next week to get my order so I went Wal-Mart and found some black and light brown African Gold KK.

I didn't take close up pictures of the ends because I know they need work. Some of these need to be resealed, but let me know what you think otherwise!

These 4 pictures are all made with the African Gold kk.

The rest of these were made with the KK that I bought from I Kick Shins.

Here's my second attempt at a candycane, it seems to be coming apart a bit and the colours are too subtle so it was kind of a waste of time. Here's also my first attempt at a transitional (the black is the African Gold). They're both also a bit wonky because I need to re-seal one side of each and get rid of the lop-sided center (if that makes sense..)

Here's my first splashed dreads. There's 2 Honeymoon and 2 Mixed Strawberry Blond. Three of them are splashed with Amber and the 4th with Neon Violet.

And here's 2 pictures of them all together

Tips/advice/criticism welcome! Thanks for looking!

I think you just raised the standard for what newbie dreads are supposed to come out as :i2:

Great work.

Only tips I can offer you are to keep making dreads :D work on the uniformity/length and with the swirls, backcomb the two colours a bit more together as well, you may want to invest in a felting needle too.

:D Thanks very much!
I'm definitely going to keep making dreads for awhile. At least 'till I get a full set, haha.
I'm on the lookout for a felting needle. I've been to a speciatly craft store and the employees had no idea what I was talking about! I showed them a picture and they told me to try a fabric store, so I'm going to try that next.

Thanks again for your feedback! :D

You're welcome :)

Try etsy for felting needles. You'll need a 36g or so to handle synthetic hair.

Way better than my first dreads i must say.

But , the back-combing needs some work.
Sealing you seem to have down pretty well.

When doing candy canes i back-comb each color separately than put the side by side and back-comb them so that they meet in the middle.

Keep it up.
Practice makes perfect.

Amazing first dreads!

My first dreads unraveled as I was wearing them! They sucked. They were my first synth dreads. The first thing I braided into my hair was loads of big red wool.. I looked like a raggedy ann!! Can't believe I actually wore them out!

So yeah. A bit more practise and they will be perfect.

Experiment with using different brushes to backcomb. You might find one works better than another.

Ebay sells lots of cheap felting needles too!

Hooray! Thanks for your feedback everyone!
I can see why everyone keeps saying "practice makes perfect". I can see the difference from my first dread to the last one I made. Hopefully I'll get backcombing down pat soon enough. I usually get impatient after backcombing for an hour or so and I just jump on sealing because I'm excited to see a finished product. So time consuming though!

Thanks again! :D
